Purdue has looked pretty good early. Another loss though and they are out of contention in the Big Ten West.
Minnesota was supposed to be a contender but things have not shaken out that way this season.
This could be a solid game but Minnesota is so hard to peg this season.
Purdue Boilermakers
After a couple of close wins the Boilermakers lost to Northwestern last week 27-20. No shame there, especially without their top defensive player.
Purdue has been surprisingly stingy on defense this season, giving up just under 24ppg. That player mentioned above, George Karlaftis, might be out again this week.
On offense, Purdue moves the ball but has no balance this season. They are averaging 305ypg through the air which is in the top 20 but just 63ypg on the ground, 124th.
That air production is even more impressive because Rondale Moore has not played this season. Without him no single receiver has stood out.
It says a lot about what we have seen from these programs thus far that Purdue is favoured on the road in this spot.
Minnesota Golden Gophers
Every year there are teams who fall dramatically compared to the season before and preseason expectations. Minnesota is a surprise to be that team this season though.
One reason is they had continuity at both coach and at quarterback. Tanner Morgan has been a shell of what he was a year ago and it is hard to pinpoint why.
The running game has exploded this season. Mohammed Ibrahim has rushed for at least 140 yards in every game this season with a high of 224.
Even though they have been able to eat clock with the ground game the defense has been so bad it has not been a winning formula. Nobody expected this to be an elite stop unit but 36ppg allowed is 100th in the nation.
