This is the first day of action for the new college football season and I think this is the best game of the day. The Rams are a slight favourite in a rare case of a Power 5 team playing a road game at a Group of Five program.
There is some good buzz coming out of Fort Collins this preseason.
This Rams team has a great chance to be a sleeper in the Mountain West Conference. A win would be a good start.
Oregon State Beavers
In most scenarios the Beavers are the worst team in the PAC 12 North and probably the worst team in the whole conference. Still they are going to be competitive whenever they step out of the league to lower competition.
This year they are hoping to crank up things on offense. Last season they had balance but weren’t all that great running or throwing the ball. This season Gary Andersen is hoping he has found his QB in enormous Jake Luton.
The strength of the team is likely to be the defense.
They have good size up front and enough returning players sprinkled around the roster to expect improvement there. They need to be better against the run for sure – 218ypg allowed last season.
Colorado State Rams
The Rams won seven games a year ago but most of the time when the competition stiffened they fell short.
They might have pummeled San Diego State to close the regular season but it was a meaningless game for the Aztecs.
The offense scored 35 points per game a year ago and might be even better this season with top passer, rusher and receiver returning – all seniors.
Nick Stephens to Michael Gallup is one of the most prolific passing combinations in the game and they will test the Beavers secondary.
On defense they profile similar to Oregeon State.
The numbers are not very good but with with 7 starters returning there could be some improvement. They are not very big up front though and might get pushed around if the Beavers commit to running the ball.

Those extra half points will get you every time. You think the oddsmakers know there are going to be people jonesing for some action on this game that will overlook it. The question is whether it is enough.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Colorado State -3.5
I might tease this one down to -3 just to be on the safe side but even here it is not too bad a number for a game I think they will win with relative ease. Look for the offense to be midseason form.
Additionally, you have to think the Rams fans will be an advantage here. It is not too often they get to start at home against an opponent of this calibre. I think the advantage is more than the standard three points in this spot.
