This is a rivalry game, though I can’t recall a ton of heat between the Ducks and Beavers lately.
Oregon is undefeated this season but the recent playoffs rankings show they have a lot to do if they want to be considered.
Oregon State got their first win of the season last time out. A winning streak does not look likely.
Oregon Ducks
The Ducks are undefeated, so it can’t be all that bad, right?
New starting QB Tyler Shough has proven he can handle the position and has a bright future for sure. The team is averaging 38ppg thanks to a very balanced offense.
However, the defense has not been elite, especially after giving up 35 points to former Oregon coach Chip Kelly and UCLA. With each game the point total has gone up.
The Ducks defense was supposed to be the stronger of the two units this season and that has not been the case. The question is whether they can get there.
Oregon does not need its best game to win this week but it would be really nice to see something closer to the ceiling.
Oregon State Beavers
The Beavers are off a win over Cal. The offense looked the best it has all season, scoring a season-high 31 points against a defense that is supposed to be good.
Coach Jonathan Smith is a likable guy and he should have success at Oregon State. What that ceiling is remains to be seen though.
He does not have an NFL bound quarterback like he did in Jake Luton last year. He has some players but they are more of a smattering than a wave.
Last year these teams played a very low scoring game, 24-10 won by the Ducks but covered by the Beavers. For Oregon State to be in this one they may have to recreate that formula.
