Oregon will be looking to bounce back after a crushing defeat last week against Stanford. California on the other hand have gotten off to a very good start and will be looking to upset the Ducks for their first conference win of the year.
The last time these two teams met, Oregon won the game 45-24, so California will be trying to seek revenge for the beating they took in Eugene last year.
Oregon had Stanford beat last week, which would have been huge for their program. If they had won that game they would probably be ranked in the top 15. However, they were unable to hold the big lead they had and ended up losing in overtime 31-38.
Oregon quarterback, Justin Herbert, has already shown some amazing talent thus far and was even being talked about as a Heisman candidate. He has thrown for at least 250 yards in every game this year and already has 1186 yards through the air. The Ducks will need their star player to forget about last week and focus on a sneaky Cal team that has the potential to hang around.
Defense should be the focus for this week’s game, as they allowed Stanford to get back in the game last week. One positive note is their rushing defense. They rank fifth in the country and only allow an average of 80.2 rushing yards per game. This will be vital to the outcome because the Golden Bears have three running backs with 100 yards of more.
California Golden Bears
The Golden Bears are off to a 3-0 start and can really shake up the PAC 12 standings with an upset win over the Ducks. If the Golden Bears can pull off the upset, they will essentially eliminate Oregon from the College Football Playoff and make it very difficult for the Ducks to recover and make a run for the PAC 12 title game.
Offensively the Golden Bears rely on their rushing attack. Running back, Patrick Laird has 147 yards and one touchdown, quarterback, Brandon Mcllwain has 129 yards and a touchdown and Chase Garbers has 126 yards. Combined they have 402 yards on the ground, which makes up a chunk of the Golden Bears total offense. Through the air, Chase Garbers has thrown for 454 yards and six touchdowns.
Defensively the Golden Bears have not allowed more than 23 points in a game this year. Unfortunately, none of the teams they have played have a quarterback like Justin Herbert. Herbert is young and bound to make mistakes, so it is crucial the Golden Bears take advantage of any mistakes and turn them into points.
