Oregon and Auburn are set for a prime time Saturday night matchup at the famous “Jerry World” in Arlington, Texas. Both teams come into the season with hopes of sneaking into the College Football Playoff.
Oregon Ducks
The big story for the Ducks this season is the return of Heisman hopeful quarterback, Justin Herbert. Herbert’s return to the Ducks came as a bit of a surprise, as it seemed like he was on a fast track to be a shoe-in 1st rounder, if not the 1st pick overall, in last years NFL draft.

With the Ducks returning all 5 starters from arguably the best offensive line in college football this year, Herbert should have plenty of time to show off his arm strength downfield and build upon those middle of the road YPG numbers.
The Ducks also return outstanding running back C.J Verdell. As a freshman last season, Verdell rushed for just over 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns on 202 carries. Verdell also looked sharp as a receiving threat out of the backfield, having hauled in 27 receptions for 327 yards in his freshman campaign. Travis Dye returns to the backfield coming off a season where he ran for 739 yards as true Sophomore.
While the Ducks remain intact at quarterback, running back, and o-line, they did lose one big piece on the outside. Dillon Mitchell, the 14th ranked wideout in terms of receiving yards, decided to skip his senior season and put his name in the NFL draft. Mitchell ended up being drafted in the 7th round by the Minnesota Vikings. The Ducks will look to 5’8 junior Taylor Redd to try and fill Mitchell’s role.
Oregon’s defensive line did suffer a bit of a blow with the loss of 7th round pick Jalen Jelks. However, they may have found an even better replacement when they were able to land #1 overall recruit in the nation Kavion Thibodeaux.
Thibodeaux figures to start immediately on a defensive line that returns junior standout Jordan Scott as well Austin Faoliu. Inside linebacker Troy Dye will be looked upon to anchor this defense on his quest to give himself 3 straight 100+ tackle seasons. The speedy inside linebacker is a projected early-round pick in 2020 NFL draft.
This offense looked dangerous a year ago, and it’s scary to think they have a very realistic shot at being MUCH better this season. I like the Ducks’ offensive line to hold up against a tough Auburn front 7. Oregon wins this one and solidifies themselves as serious College Football Playoff contender.
Auburn Tigers
The Auburn Tigers will turn to true Freshman quarterback Bo Nix to start the season after Jared Stidham decided to forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft.

Making your first college start in “Jerry World” against a serious National Championship contender is certainly going to be quite a shock to this young man’s system. It will be interesting to see just how much Gus Malzahn will ask of his quarterback in this one. Nix is said to have tremendous mobility, so look for Auburn to come out with a run-heavy attack on offense.
The offense returns their two top running backs from a year ago as well as explosive sophomore wide receiver Seth Williams, who averaged over 20 yards per reception last season. The Tigers did lose top wide receiver Darius Slayton, who has been competing for the #3 wideout spot in camp for the New York Giants after being selected in 5th round of the NFL draft.
The bread and butter of this Auburn football team will unquestionably be their defense. The Tigers have one of the best defensive fronts in the nation, led by defensive tackle Derrick Brown, who will more than likely be a first-round pick in next years NFL draft. Nick Coe is another major talent on a defensive line that has no shortage of standout players.
Coe and Brown had a combined 24 tackles for loss between the two of them last season.

Free Week 1 NCAA Football Pick
The Tigers are going to have to win the battle up front by a wide margin against one of the best offensive lines in the nation if they want to leave Arlington with a W under their belt. While they may make some big plays here and there, I don’t see the defense making up for an offense that lacks an experienced quarterback under center.
Beating Oregon with a quarterback that has never taken a collegiate snap before is just too tall of a task. Give me Oregon with the points at a neutral venue.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Oregon +3.5
I like the Ducks offensive line to neutralize Auburn’s big boys up front. I think the Ducks will be able to move the ball with fluidity on offense while disrupting Auburn’s freshman gunslinger enough to create some turnovers and pull out a close victory in Arlington.
