The Old Dominion Monarchs will take the two-hour trip up I-64 and take on the Virginia Cavaliers in a battle of Commonwealth teams on the ACC Network. Virginia comes into this one as the eight-point favorites here at home, with the total opening at 52.5.
HISTORY: UVA and ODU crossed paths for the first back in 2019, with the Cavaliers coming away with the 28-17 victory in Charlottesville.
Old Dominion Monarchs
ODU opened their 2022 season win one of the biggest wins in school history, taking down Virginia Tech in Norfolk behind 10-0 fourth quarter run, 20-17. The Monarchs had a chance to continue their regional dominance last Saturday, but they couldn’t keep the party going.
Last weekend, ODU lost to East Carolina in Greenville, 39-21, failing to capitalize on the 13-point underdog spread.
Hayden Wolff returned at the quarterback spot after starting nine games last season. Wolff struggled a bit in the upset win over Tech, completing ust 40% of his passes. The sophomore QB bounced back by tossing three TDs against ECU, and he’ll need to carry that momentum into this week’s battle with UVA.
Blake Watson has gotten all of the backfield work through two games. The junior back didn’t receive much work against ECU due to the Monarchs trailing, but he gained 56 yards and score the winning touchdown against Tech.
Ali Jennings III transferred home from LSU and became ODU number one read instantly. The junior wideout had a career day in Greenville, catching eight passes for a career-high 200 yards and a scoring a personal-best three touchdowns against the Pirates.
Virginia Cavaliers
Virginia opened the 2022 season with a home victory over Richmond. The Cavs came out firing against their in-state foes, scoring 28 first half points en route to a 17-point victory. UVA traveled for the first time last Saturday, and sputtered on the road.
Last weekend, Virginia lost to Illinois in Champaign, 24-3, dropping to 0-2 ATS this season.
Brennan Armstrong set school records in Bronco Mendenhall’s Air Raid last season, but things have started a lot slower this year. The fifth-year senior found himself in no mans-land against Illinois, completing a career-low 40% of his passes, while taking five sacks. The offensive line has to improve swiftly if they want to keep their star QB upright.
Armstong is up to 426 passing yards with two touchdowns to three interceptions through the first two games.
Perris Jones has taken on the lead role early, and he performed well against Richmond, turning 21 touches into 118 yards with two total touchdowns (1 rush, 1 rec).
UVA still possess one of the better four-wideout sets in the country. Swiss-army knife Keytaon Thompson led the team in catches last season, and he’s got a team-lead nine catches through the first two weeks. Dotayvion Wicks recorded a 1200-yard season in 2022, and he’s got eight catches for 70 yards thus far.

I like the Cavaliers coming out here and overpowering the Monarchs offensively, but the factor of motivation can’t be overlooked here.
