Week 1 of the 2026 college football season brings Notre Dame and Wisconsin together at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET on Sunday, September 6, with NBC and Peacock carrying the game.
Notre Dame enters ranked fourth in the AP Poll and fifth in the Coaches Poll.
The Fighting Irish finished 10-2 last season and closed the year on a 10-game winning streak. Wisconsin had a tougher 2025, finishing 4-8 overall and 2-7 in Big Ten play.
Notre Dame brings championship expectations into a showcase opener against a rebuilding Wisconsin team.
The Badgers went 4-3 at home but 0-5 on the road, and their season ended with a 17-7 loss to Minnesota. Notre Dame finished by beating Stanford 49-20. In the most recent head-to-head meeting, the Fighting Irish defeated Wisconsin 41-13 in 2021.
Notre Dame is the designated home team for this Shamrock Series matchup, although Wisconsin should have plenty of support in Green Bay. Lambeau Field gives the opener a different feel from the usual campus setting.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Wisconsin Badgers Odds & Last 5
Notre Dame is heavily favored heading into Sunday’s matchup. FanDuel lists the Fighting Irish at -20.5 and Wisconsin at +20.5, with Notre Dame -1786 and the Badgers +980 on the moneyline. The total is currently 46.5 after 47.5 was available earlier in the week.
Notre Dame won its final 10 games last season, while Wisconsin finished 4-8.
The Irish closed 2025 with a 49-20 victory over Stanford. Wisconsin’s late stretch included losses to Indiana and Minnesota around a 27-10 win over Illinois. The Badgers scored only seven points in both defeats.
Notre Dame went 6-6 ATS last season and 4-3 when favored by at least 20.5 points. Wisconsin was 2-1 ATS when getting 20.5 or more, giving bettors something to consider with this large spread.
Badgers Stats
Wisconsin’s 2025 offense struggled for consistency, finishing with 1,637 passing yards and 1,456 rushing yards. The Badgers scored only 154 points in 12 games. Defensively, they recorded 32 sacks while allowing 259 points.
The season ended with a 17-7 loss to Minnesota after Wisconsin had beaten Illinois 27-10.
A 31-7 loss to Indiana also showed how difficult it became for the Badgers when the offense stalled.
Darrion Dupree led Wisconsin with 363 rushing yards, while Hunter Simmons paced the team with 664 passing yards. Danny O’Neil added 635 passing yards and five touchdowns, but those are now historical numbers rather than Wisconsin’s 2026 quarterback picture.
Old Dominion transfer Colton Joseph is the new starting quarterback after throwing for 2,624 yards and 21 touchdowns while rushing for 1,007 yards and 13 scores last season.

Fighting Irish Stats
Notre Dame’s offense produced 504 points across 12 games in 2025. The Fighting Irish also rushed for 2,472 yards. That balance helped fuel the 10-game winning streak that closed their season.
CJ Carr threw for 2,741 yards and 24 touchdowns against six interceptions. Jeremiyah Love powered the ground game with 1,372 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns.
The Irish defense recorded 35 sacks and allowed 211 points last season. Joseph’s mobility presents a different challenge for that unit.
Wide receiver Quincy Porter is out, while linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa is questionable, but Notre Dame still enters with the deeper and more proven roster.

Fighting Irish vs. Badgers QB Matchup
Wisconsin’s quarterback picture has changed from last season. Danny O’Neil threw for 635 yards and five touchdowns, while Carter Smith finished with 201 yards and two scores. Neither is the centerpiece of the Badgers’ offense now.
That job belongs to Colton Joseph, who transferred from Old Dominion after a huge 2025 season. Joseph threw for 2,624 yards and 21 touchdowns while rushing for 1,007 yards and 13 more scores.
Notre Dame has much more continuity with CJ Carr returning as its starter. Carr threw for 2,741 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions over 12 games last season.
His efficiency and experience give the Fighting Irish an advantage in proven passing production.
Freshmen Noah Grubbs and Teddy Jarrard are listed behind Carr as Notre Dame’s primary backup options entering Sunday night.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Wisconsin Badgers bottom line: Carr provides proven continuity, while Joseph gives the rebuilt Badgers a dangerous dual-threat quarterback.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Wisconsin Badgers Football Betting Trends

- Wisconsin is 4-0 against the spread as an underdog in their last 4 games.

Fighting Irish Badgers Free Pick: Wisconsin +20.5
Here is my Fighting Irish Badgers free pick:
Notre Dame deserves to be laying a big number after a 10-2 season, but 20.5 points is still a lot to hand Wisconsin in a neutral-site opener. The Irish bring back CJ Carr and Jeremiyah Love, so I understand why bettors are comfortable paying the premium.
Still, Wisconsin is not rolling out the same offense that struggled through 2025. Old Dominion transfer Colton Joseph takes over at quarterback after throwing for 2,624 yards and 21 touchdowns while adding 1,007 rushing yards and 13 scores last season.
The number gives Wisconsin plenty of room to make this ugly and still cash.
There are concerns, especially with offensive linemen Kevin Heywood and Emerson Mandell facing uncertain availability. Yet Joseph’s mobility gives the Badgers another way to survive pressure. Wisconsin’s defense should be the unit most capable of keeping this game from getting completely sideways.
Notre Dame went 6-6 against the spread last season, including 4-3 when favored by at least 20.5 points. On the other side, Wisconsin was 2-1 ATS when catching 20.5 or more.
I am not calling for an upset at Lambeau Field. I am betting Wisconsin can hang around long enough to make three touchdowns too many, so I’ll take the Badgers +20.5.
