Northwestern lost a heart breaker last week while Michigan State defeated Central Michigan. Both teams will be looking for their second conference win in hopes to move up the standings.
The last time these teams met, Northwestern upset Michigan State by a score of 39-31. The Spartans will be looking to get revenge while also trying to stay in the hunt for a potential Playoff Spot.
Last week, Northwestern had a 17-0 lead on Michigan, but failed to score again and ended up losing 17-20. The Wildcats have played much better than their 1-3 record, but have had trouble finishing games out. They will face a much tougher test as the take on the Spartans in a hostile environment and cannot afford to make many mistakes.
The Wildcats will lean toward their leading wide receiver, Flynn Nagel to provide some offense for the Wildcats. Nagel leads the team with 291 receiving yards, but has yet to find the end zone. Look for Nagel to catch his first touchdown of the year, which will help keep Northwestern in the game.
Last week the defense played pretty well, allowing just 20 points. However, Michigan scored these 20 points unanswered including a drive late in the game that sealed the win. Look for the defense to step up and have a solid showing against the Spartans.
Michigan State Spartans
The Spartans won their game last week against Central Michigan 31-20, but did not look necessarily good while doing so. They had a 31-3 lead going into the fourth quarter, but allowed 17 straight points to make the game look close. As they start to play Big Ten teams, they need to focus on finishing games strong and not allowing teams to make a late comeback
The offense for the Spartans are averaging 29.2 points per game, which ranks 72nd in the country. Quarterback, Brian Lewerke has thrown for 999 yards this season and five touchdown, but he also has five interceptions. Going forward, Lewerke will need to be smarter with the ball otherwise there are several teams in the Big Ten that could hand them a loss.
The biggest standout for the Spartans is their run defense. They allow an average of 40.2 rushing yards per game, which ranks first in the country. On the flip side, their passing defense allows an average of 288.2 yards per game, which ranks 115th.
