It’s deja vu at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday as the University of Northern Iowa Panthers hit the road to take on the Iowa State Cyclones, a rematch of last years’ season opener.
But unlike last years’ 31-7 victory by Iowa State, this one should see a little more fight from the Panthers.
In fact, this game may remind people of the Panthers’ 2013 matchup against the Cyclones, where they walked away with a stunning 28-20 victory.
But to think that all hope is lost for Iowa State is far from the truth.
Though they went just 3-9 last season the Cyclones have a mammoth of an offensive line, a new coach, and the potential to make a little more headway in a challenging Big-12.
The Panthers will put up quite the fight but expect Iowa State to pull away with this one in a close opener for both teams. I’m calling 27-21 Cyclones.
University of Northern Iowa Panthers
Though the Panthers lost their opening game to the Cyclones last season, they then proceeded to run through their schedule and the FCS playoffs to the tune of a 9-5 record that included a huge matchup against North Dakota State which they unfortunately lost 23-13.
Not only did they lose that game either, as in the offseason they saw the departure of the likes of Deiondre Hall and Tim Kilfoy. Add in a few other big name players for the Panthers and many may see this as a rebuilding season.
However, don’t count them out as Northern Iowa does have Illinois transfer Aaron Bailey at quarterback.
Iowa State Cyclones
There’s no doubting that the Cyclones have been somewhat ignored in the Big-12 as of late, and a 3-9 season didn’t do much to help their cause in 2015.
But new head coach Matt Campbell has done wonders during his first few months as head coach, giving hope to a 2016 Iowa State squad that could make some moves in the Big-12.
Helping them with that move are quarterback Joel Lanning, running back Mike Warren, and a defensive front that returns both Demond Tucker and J.D. Waggoner.
The improvement may not be as drastic as Iowa State fans want, but it should be to the tune of 2-3 additional wins this season.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Northern Iowa and Iowa State played in 2015 with Iowa State winning 31-7
- Northern Iowa has a knack for playing FBS teams close, for example a 26-21 loss to No. 12 Wisconsin in 2012 and a 31-23 loss to Iowa in 2014.
- Northern Iowa upset Iowa State in 2013 with a 28-20 win on the road.
Free Week 1 NCAA Football Prediction
Northern Iowa will challenge for an FCS Championship in 2016 and has been tough for FBS opponents to handle in recent history.
Despite this Iowa State should improve in the coming years and will start their path to Big-12 redemption this Saturday.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: OFF
Northern Iowa will give Iowa State quite the challenge in this matchup but the Cyclones should prevail in the end. Look for a close one that ends 27-21 in favor of the Cylcones.
