These two teams are probably the biggest disappointments in the MAC so far this season…at least in the nonconference part of the schedule.
Ohio got a win in its first MAC tilt so it might be on its way to competing in the East.
That is not the case for the new Northern Illinois regime. They do not look like a competitor in the West Division this season.
Northern Illinois Huskies
Northern Illinois has yet to register an FBS win this season. They have lost their last four game and only been competitive in the last two. Losing to Ball State at home has to sting for this proud program.

Despite preseason statements the new regime has this offense more pass heavy than in the past. That might be because they just aren’t able to run the ball the way they want to and are playing a ton from behind.
The defense has been OK with a huge discrepancy between yards and points allowed. They are getting run on like crazy though, almost 200 yards per game.
The pass defense has held up but again that could be a result of time and score. They are giving up only 180 yards per game through the air, that is Top 20.

Ohio is a stalwart program in the MAC so getting a league win in Athens is going to be tough. They might have to wait til they host Akron in a couple of weeks.
Ohio Bobcats
Ohio escaped their MAC opener at Buffalo, winning by a point in overtime. It broke a three game losing streak and gave them their first FBS win of the season.
Nathan O’Rourke is a dual threat senior QB who was supposed to lead Ohio to good things this season. So far he has not been very good. All of his stats are down.
The defense has also been mediocre at best. They are giving up more than 200 yards per game on the ground and that is without facing an option team. They just can’t get stops.
Perhaps the start of conference play is a chance for a reset. The MAC East is hardly a dominant group so they could still find their way to the top of it.

Free Week 7 NCAA Football Pick
I was too bullish on NIU to start the season and got burned. Now I am thinking it is time to cut bait. This is not a good spot for the Huskies.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Ohio -6.5
Ohio being at home is a definite factor here and they are coming off a win so there should be some degree of confidence too. O’Rourke can up his game.
If/when Ohio gets its offense rolling, it is going to be too much for the Huskies. They only have to win each half by a field goal really. I will take that bet.
