The Mean Green took a heavy loss to SMU in Week 2, 54-32. The Hawkeyes, on the other hand, are coming off a crunch time 44-41 overtime victory over Iowa State.
The last time these two programs met was the 2015 campaign—a matchup that resulted in an Iowa victory to the tune of 62-16.
This time around, the spread is set at Iowa -21.5. The Hawkeyes getting the victory really isn’t in question here. What is in question is whether or not they can put together the kind of showing to win the contest both straight up and ATS.
North Texas Mean Green
If you just watched the early part of last week’s North Texas showdown with SMU…hoo boy, did you miss a lot.
Despite scoring the first 10 points of the contest, North Texas gave up 38 consecutive points en route to an eventual 54-32 loss. Nobody realistically expected the Mean Green to blow out SMU, but not capitalizing on a quick, hot start is a major disappointment for this program.
Against Iowa, controlling turnovers is going to be important. Mason Fine had a strong showing last week with 393 yards and three touchdowns, but those positives were ultimately negated with two interceptions.
That’s something that simply can’t happen—especially with the way this team struggled running the football.
The Iowa Hawkeyes came out winners in one of college football’s most exciting games during Week 2. They fought back from 10 points down in the fourth quarter and pulled off a three-point victory in overtime.
In that contest, quarterback Nathan Stanley recorded an impressive 333 passing yards with five touchdowns. Even more impressive—and something North Texas’ QB should take note of—is that he threw zero interceptions in the process.
The sophomore QB has now thrown for eight touchdowns and just a single interception through two games, and on top of that, Akrum Wadley has proven dangerous in the running game.
A week ago, Wadley had 118 yards on 28 carries—not to mention 72 yards through the air.

- IOWA are 4-10-1 ATS in their last 15 home games
Free Week 3 NCAA Football Pick
The Hawkeyes have been less than stellar against the spread at home over their last 15 games, which could worry some. If you’re scared off by that, we can’t blame you.
But virtually every other trend and every other thing you could put to the eye test says this game should be one-sided from the get go.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Iowa ATS
At this point in the season, Iowa has proven to be efficient on offense. That’s something North Texas simply can’t state about itself.
Iowa will likely give up a big play or two, which will keep North Texas in it during the first half. But this one will likely come down to the turnover battle, and the Hawkeyes will have the clear edge when the clock strikes 0:00 for the final time.
