This game could have big implications for the ACC Coastal Division as a loss for the Tar Heels would just about close the book on any ACC hopes. And a win for Georgia Tech would give them their second straight divisional win and keep them rolling as Miami awaits next week.

North Carolina’s lone win over Old Dominion was very unimpressive so this is a game that could help them gain some confidence before their ACC schedule continues.
North Carolina Tar Heels
The Tar Heels lost as home double digit favorites to Cal to open the season but Cal has now proven to be much better than people originally thought.
North Carolina then gave Louisville a decent game but lost their second straight game at home before going on the road and clobbering Old Dominion.
Last week at home against Duke was a chance to get things rolling a bit but they faltered and the injuries for the Tar Heels are starting to pile up.
Early week injury report for the Tar Heels had 20 players on it – which does not bode well for Georgia Tech’s physical option offense.

The Tar Heels have given up the 38th most rushing yards in the nation on the season and at 4.5 yards per carry, that does not bode well for a matchup with the Yellow Jackets.
It is important to look at recent matchups when facing a rare offense like Georgia Tech’s. That looks pretty good for the Tar Heels as they have won 3 straight over Georgia Tech after losing the previous 5 matchups.
Elijah Hood and Mitchell Trubisky carried the Tar Heels in the game last season as Trubisky threw a touchdown and ran for another while Hood ran for 3 TDs and 168 yards on the ground.
The problem is both of those guys are gone and the Tar Heels are nowhere near that type of explosiveness on offense.
An important game for the Tar Heels looks like it will be a challenging one with injuries piling up everywhere for a team that already lacked some depth and experience.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
The Yellow Jackets have rebounded from a tough Week 1 opening loss in double overtime to Tennessee with two straight convincing wins over Jacksonville State and Pittsburgh.
Neither of those opponents is great but nonetheless, the Georgia Tech defense at least has looked improved after surrendering 42 points in the opener.
Taquon Marshall has stepped in nicely at quarterback for all-time Georgia Tech great Justin Thomas. He has completed 14 of his 23 passes for 280 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions while also leading the team in rushing yards and touchdowns with 386 yards and 8 touchdowns.
[dfads params=’groups=219&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
The offense is averaging 5.8 yards per carry as a group and they will look to capitalize on a beaten up and struggling North Carolina run defense.
If the Georgia Tech defense is able to create a couple of turnovers, the UNC defense will stand no chance of keeping up with the Yellow Jacket offense.
I expect them to wear down the defense regardless as they typically do but with North Carolina facing a lot of injuries and coming off a physical game with Duke, they’re in a position to run out of gas against the option attack.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Under is 7-2 in UNC’s last nine conference games.
- UNC has 10 players listed as out for Saturday and 8 listed as questionable.
- Home team has outgained the visiting team in 9 of the last 10 matchups.
- Georgia Tech is 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games.
Free Week 5 NCAA Football Pick
Marshall wasn’t going to be asked to be Justin Thomas but he has shown early on that maybe he can be. The key will be protecting the football. Long drives will wear down the Tar Heel defense and let the Yellow Jackets run away with another ACC victory.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Georgia Tech -9.5
I do think North Carolina has played better than their record early on but going on the road here with a beat up team is going to be challenging. The season isn’t dead for the Tar Heels if they lose here but it will be close to it. I think the Yellow Jackets will be run away with this one late.
