Tar Heels vs. Tigers Gameday
North Carolina travels to Clemson Saturday to open ACC play against the Tigers at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon ET on ESPN.
The Tar Heels arrive 2-0 after beating TCU 15-10 in Dublin and handling East Tennessee State 35-3 in Chapel Hill. Bill Belichick’s team hasn’t exactly been running a carnival offensively, but 50 points scored and 13 allowed works just fine.
North Carolina is 2-0, and nobody in Chapel Hill is required to apologize for winning ugly.
Clemson has taken the scenic route to 1-1. The Tigers were hammered 51-10 at LSU before returning home and beating Georgia Southern 22-7 in a weather-delayed game that didn’t end until after 1 a.m.
At least Saturday comes with a noon reservation.
Clemson has won the last three meetings, including a 38-10 victory in Chapel Hill last October. The Tigers lead the all-time series 41-19-1 and haven’t lost to North Carolina since 2010.

North Carolina’s first two games have produced only 25 and 38 combined points. The Tar Heels needed defense to survive TCU before getting considerably more comfortable against ETSU.
Clemson hasn’t exactly been printing Overs, either.
The Tigers followed their 51-10 disaster at LSU with a 22-7 win over Georgia Southern. Clemson’s defense forced eight three-and-outs, but the offense settled for five Nolan Hauser field goals.
Now the Tigers open ACC play at home against an unbeaten opponent. Three and a hook says the sportsbooks aren’t terribly interested in Clemson’s preseason reputation anymore.

Clemson has scored only 32 points through two games, with most of the offensive damage coming after games were already headed in uncomfortable directions. The Tigers managed 10 at LSU and needed five field goals to reach 22 against Georgia Southern.
Tait Reynolds now gets his first career start.
Reynolds replaced Christopher Vizzina early against Georgia Southern and completed 16 of 27 passes for 178 yards. He also rushed 14 times for 38 yards while directing five scoring drives, although every one of those possessions ended with a field goal.
Five field goals beat Georgia Southern; North Carolina may politely request Clemson discover the other four points.
Gideon Davidson leads the Tigers with 82 rushing yards through two games. T.J. Moore provided the biggest receiving performance last week, catching seven passes for 103 yards and Clemson’s only touchdown.
The defense finally looked more like Clemson against Georgia Southern. The Tigers forced three-and-outs on the Eagles’ first six possessions and allowed only seven points. That was a welcome response after LSU hung 51 on them in Baton Rouge.
Vizzina is probable after injuring his left arm last week, but Swinney has made clear Reynolds earned the starting job on performance. Vizzina is expected to be available as the backup.

North Carolina’s defense has carried plenty of weight during its 2-0 start. The Tar Heels have allowed only 13 points while recording seven sacks through two games.
TCU managed 281 total yards in the opener.
ETSU didn’t fare much better, finishing with 255 yards and only 77 on the ground. North Carolina also recorded four sacks and kept the Buccaneers out of the end zone in the 35-3 victory.
Billy Edwards Jr. has provided steady quarterback play. Edwards has thrown for 476 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He completed 15 of 20 passes for 244 yards and both touchdowns against ETSU after throwing for 232 in the opener against TCU.
The running game has been more committee than star vehicle.
Benjamin Hall leads North Carolina with 85 rushing yards, while Demon June scored three times against ETSU. The Tar Heels ran for 161 yards in that game after managing only 90 against TCU.
That’s not spectacular, but 2-0 tends to make style points considerably less urgent.

Tait Reynolds will make his first career start for Clemson after earning the job with his performance against Georgia Southern. The freshman has appeared in both games and completed 60.6% of his passes, but he’s still looking for his first career touchdown throw.
Saturday is a considerably bigger audition.
Reynolds earned the keys to Clemson’s offense; now he gets a UNC defense allowing 6.5 points per game.
Christopher Vizzina started the first two games but injured his left arm against Georgia Southern. He is listed as probable and is expected to dress as Reynolds’ backup, so this is a performance-driven change rather than an emergency replacement.
Billy Edwards Jr. brings considerably more experience to the other sideline.
The North Carolina starter has completed 31 passes for 476 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. More importantly, he’s gone through two games without giving opponents a short field through the air.
That’s been enough with this defense.
Edwards doesn’t need to chase a huge passing number Saturday. If he protects the football and makes Clemson sustain drives with a freshman quarterback, North Carolina can keep this uncomfortable well into the afternoon.
Tar Heels vs. Tigers bottom line: Clemson finally changed quarterbacks after spending two weeks searching for an offense, and 43.5 is low enough that Reynolds doesn’t need to find all of it at once.

Here is my Tar Heels Tigers free pick: Over 43.5 is my play Saturday at Clemson. That doesn’t exactly scream shootout, but 43.5 gives these offenses a pretty low bar to clear. We don’t need anybody reinventing offensive football here.
Billy Edwards Jr. has been efficient, and UNC just produced 427 yards against ETSU. Clemson’s offense has been clunky, but Tait Reynolds now gets the start after moving the ball better than Christopher Vizzina against Georgia Southern.
Clemson doesn’t need to become Oregon overnight.
Clemson has spent two weeks making touchdowns look optional; 43.5 doesn’t require an offensive revolution.
The Tigers do need touchdowns instead of another five-field-goal afternoon, and North Carolina should force that issue.
UNC has enough balance to reach the 20s here. Edwards has thrown for 476 yards without an interception, while the Tar Heels have also rushed for 251 yards through two games.
The Clemson side is the gamble.
Reynolds threw for 178 yards in relief last week and adds some mobility, which should give this offense a little more life. Clemson has enough skill talent to avoid another afternoon spent treating the end zone like private property.
At 43.5, I’m not asking for fireworks. A competitive ACC game in the 24-21 neighborhood gets us there.
Over 43.5 is my play.
