Aggies vs. Panthers Gameday
New Mexico State heads to Miami Wednesday night for a Conference USA matchup against FIU at South Dade Kia Field at Pitbull Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET on ESPN2. Tony Sanchez’s Aggies enter 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Willie Simmons’ Panthers are 2-2 and making their CUSA debut.
Both teams finally tasted victory again. Wednesday night decides who gets seconds.
New Mexico State snapped a two-game skid with a convincing 34-13 win over Western Kentucky.
The Aggies rushed for 206 yards and generated six sacks. They also scored defensively on a 53-yard interception return, putting together their most complete performance of the season.
The road remains another matter.
New Mexico State is 0-2 away from Las Cruces after losses at Florida State and Hawaii. Wednesday sends the Aggies roughly 1,900 miles east to South Florida, because apparently the schedule wasn’t interested in easing them into road life.
FIU has had extra preparation time after beating LIU 20-3 in its last game.
The Panthers are 2-0 at Pitbull Stadium and have surrendered only 23 combined points in those two games. FIU also won the most recent meeting with New Mexico State, rolling to a 34-13 victory in Miami in 2024.

New Mexico State Aggies vs. Florida International Panthers Odds & Last 5
FIU opened as a -6.5 home favorite.
New Mexico State was priced +190 on the moneyline, with the Panthers at -231.
The Aggies arrive with some momentum after knocking off Western Kentucky.
New Mexico State led 20-6 at halftime and never let the Hilltoppers seriously back into it. James Jones supplied a career-high 155 rushing yards as the Aggies controlled the game on the ground.
FIU’s latest victory was considerably less dramatic.
The Panthers held LIU to three points in a 20-3 win. Sometimes boring football is pretty useful when the other team isn’t scoring.
The all-time series is tied 2-2.
New Mexico State won 34-17 in 2023 before FIU answered the following year. Neither of those games was particularly interested in providing late drama.

Panthers Stats
FIU has scored 72 points through four games, with the passing game doing most of the heavy lifting.
The Panthers have thrown for 1,176 yards compared with 496 on the ground. Nobody needs a detective to figure out which direction this offense prefers.
JJ Kohl has handled nearly all of that passing work.
He’s completed 80 of 140 passes for 1,065 yards and five TD’s. Kohl has also thrown six interceptions, so protecting the football remains the obvious item circled on Willie Simmons’ checklist.
Maguire Anderson has become Kohl’s top target.
Anderson has 24 catches for 382 yards and two TD’s. FIU’s offense has enough production through the air to test an Aggies defense that has already spent plenty of time dealing with explosive plays.
The Panthers have been tougher against the run.
FIU has allowed only 326 rushing yards through four games, an average of 81.5 per contest. That’s a useful strength against an opponent coming off a game where its running attack finally got rolling.
Aggies Stats
Jones has become the most dependable part of the New Mexico State offense.
The Aggies back has rushed for 510 yards through five games. His 155-yard performance against Western Kentucky was his best of the season and helped take pressure off a changing QB situation.
TK King leads the receiving corps.
King has 20 catches for 286 yards and three TD’s. He caught another TD against Western Kentucky and gives New Mexico State a legitimate downfield option when the Aggies decide to get away from the ground game.
The Aggies finally put all three phases together. Funny how winning tends to follow that little trick.
New Mexico State has also produced 12 sacks.
De’Marcus Peters supplied one of the biggest defensive plays of the season with his pick-six against Western Kentucky. The Aggies will need that kind of disruption against an FIU offense comfortable putting the game on Kohl’s right arm.
Aggies vs. Panthers QB Matchup
Kohl enters Wednesday firmly established as FIU’s QB1.
He’s averaging better than 266 passing yards per game and has already attempted 140 passes. The Panthers aren’t shy about putting the offense in his hands.
The interceptions are the tradeoff.
Kohl has thrown six of them through four games, and that’s the opening New Mexico State will be looking to exploit. The Aggies just watched a defensive takeaway turn directly into seven points last week.
New Mexico State has a much more interesting decision.
Adam Damante made his first start of 2026 against Western Kentucky after Trey Hedden opened the first four games. Damante completed 15 of 26 passes for 146 yards and a TD while adding another score on the ground.

“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Damante’s season work has been efficient in a smaller sample.
He’s completed 34 of 48 passes for 373 yards, four TD’s and one interception. Hedden owns the bigger body of work with 887 passing yards, but Damante gave Tony Sanchez a pretty good reason to keep his name at the top of the depth chart Wednesday.
FIU knows exactly what it wants from Kohl.
New Mexico State may have found something with Damante, but one successful start doesn’t settle the position overnight. That QB contrast adds another layer to a matchup where the Aggies are trying to prove last week’s breakthrough can travel.
New Mexico State Aggies vs. Florida International Panthers bottom line: New Mexico State arrives with renewed confidence and a changing QB picture, while FIU brings continuity, extra preparation and an unbeaten home record into its conference opener.
New Mexico State Aggies vs. Florida International Panthers Football Betting Trends
- New Mexico State is 6-3 against the spread in their last 9 games.
- They are also 11-6 against the spread after a win in their last 17 games.
- Additionally, the Aggies have gone over the total in 9 of their last 15 away games.
- Florida International is 4-0 straight up as a favorite in their last 4 games.
- Plus, the Panthers are 9-3 against the spread in their last 12 home games.
- They have gone over the total in 14 of their last 23 home games.
Aggies Panthers Free Pick: Panthers -6.5
Here is my Aggies Panthers free pick: I’m laying Panthers -6.5. FIU has won four straight when favored, and I like the setup for the Panthers to keep that run going Wednesday night.
New Mexico State deserves credit for finally putting together a complete game against Western Kentucky. I’m still making the Aggies prove they can take that act on the road before I’m buying in.
FIU has had extra time to prepare for its conference opener, and this is a manageable number at home.
The Aggies finally looked good last week. One good Saturday doesn’t erase the first month.
I also like the way this number sits below a TD. FIU doesn’t need to bury New Mexico State or put on some offensive clinic for us; a solid four-quarter home performance can get this ticket where it needs to go.
The Aggies have lost both road games. FIU has taken care of business twice at home.
That’s simple, but simple isn’t a dirty word when you’re betting football.
I’m looking for the Panthers to get in front and make New Mexico State chase the game. If FIU turns this into a fourth-quarter situation where the Aggies have to throw more than they’d like, I’ll take my chances with the home defense finishing the job.
No need for a 20-point blowout. Win by seven and slide my ticket across the counter.
I’ll worry about making it complicated when sportsbooks start paying extra for complicated.
Give me Panthers -6.5.
