It’s a common trend early in the season for teams from major conferences to squeak by against lesser competition, and the Appalachian State Mountaineers haven’t been immune to this over the last couple of weeks.
The Mountain men from North Carolina had a win against in-state rival Wake Forest in the bag, especially after an offside call against the Demon Deacons got sophomore Mountaineers kicker Michael Rubino ever closer to the uprights. Yet the visitors blocked the kick, and Wake squeaked out of Boone with a 20-19 win.

So far this season, the home team Mountaineers acquitted themselves decently in a loss to Georgia and rattled off two straight wins before the Wake Forest disappointment, so veteran QB Taylor Lamb and Co. might be looking to take their frustrations out on the visiting New Mexico State Aggies this Saturday afternoon.
New Mexico State Aggies
The Aggies are only 2-3 on the season in the middling Sun Belt Conference, but they’re certainly an entertaining outfit to watch. The Aggies are averaging 351.4 yards through the air on offense, good for ninth in the nation. They throw up points at will, which also means they get scored on at will (96th ranked ‘D’ in the Football Bowl Subdivision).
New Mexico State haven’t looked terrible in losses to the Pac 12’s Arizona State (37-31) and the SEC’s Arkansas Razorbacks (42-24), while the Aggies have also beaten their in-state rivals New Mexico in Week 2. They also just missed out on beating the Troy Trojans, who have the best record in the conference.

The combination of QB Tyler Rogers (1,757 pass yards, 14 TDs) and WR Jaleel Scott (35 receptions, 543 yards, five majors) has been lethal so far. Running back Larry Rose III can also take over games at time. All components of the Aggies’ skill position players will have to be firing on the road for the Aggies to upset Appalachian State in Week 6.
Appalachian State Mountaineers
The Mountaineers are just 2-2, but currently sit second in the Sun Belt by virtue of their victory over conference foe Texas State in Week 3. Yet, drawing the Georgia Bulldogs and an in-state ACC rival isn’t exactly the cushiest non-conference schedule draw, so perhaps the Mountaineers can be excused the slip-ups.
Senior field general Lamb hasn’t been prolific, but he’s been very efficient thus far; his 994 yards passing have been completed at a 61% clip, and he has eight passing TDs, which look sterling against zero interceptions. Lamb put up a gaudy 372 yards in last week’s narrow loss to Wake, so he’ll look for similar prolific stats this week at home.

Appalachian State are well coached under Scott Satterfield, and Mountaineers will need some scheming and some gumption to contain the visitors’ explosive pass attack. Seeing as App. State were able to keep a lid on Wake Forest last week, it’s plausible that the home side has the talent to minimize the potential of Rogers, Scott, Rose and Friends.
Free Week 6 NCAA Football Pick
The Mountaineers have showcased a Top 20 scoring defense to date (19th in the FBS) and will be victorious if they can keep a lid on that Aggies pass attack. That is basically the only threat the visitors pose to Appalachian State getting back on track at Kidd Brewer Stadium. I anticipate Lamb showing some veteran guile and the defense doing enough to send New Mexico State back west with its fourth loss of the campaign.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Appalachian State -9
With two offenses that are similarly dangerous, it is always safe to skew towards the well balanced attack rather than the one-dimensional one. With that in mind, combined with Appalachian State’s superior defensive personnel, expect the Mountaineers to handle the New Mexico State Aggies on Saturday afternoon in the Appalachian Mountains.
