Lobos vs. Sooners Gameday
New Mexico gets its first road test of the season Saturday night when the Lobos travel to Norman to face No. 24 Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, with ESPN2 carrying the game.
The Lobos are 2-0 after beating Central Michigan 38-7 and Mercyhurst 70-7, both at home. New Mexico has scored 108 points while allowing only 14, which is about as clean a September start as anyone could ask for.
New Mexico has spent two weeks cruising; Norman is where the schedule stops being polite.
Oklahoma is 1-1 after opening with a 51-0 destruction of UTEP before losing 17-10 at Michigan. The Sooners rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit to tie that game before Michigan scored the winner late in the fourth quarter.
New Mexico plays in the Mountain West, while Oklahoma is beginning its third season in the SEC. The Sooners enter Week 3 ranked No. 24 in the AP poll and will be looking for a quick response before traveling to Georgia next week.

It’s Week 3, New Mexico Lobos vs. Oklahoma Sooners, with the unbeaten Lobos getting a considerable upgrade in competition for their first road game.
New Mexico Lobos vs. Oklahoma Sooners Odds & Last 5
Oklahoma is a heavy home favorite, with the current spread sitting around Sooners -22.5. New Mexico is well into plus-money territory on the moneyline, while Oklahoma is priced as the clear favorite to bounce back in Norman.
New Mexico couldn’t have done much more through two games. The Lobos beat Central Michigan by 31 before hanging 70 on Mercyhurst, giving them 108 points through two home victories.
Oklahoma’s first two games were complete opposites. The Sooners demolished UTEP 51-0 at home before managing only 10 points at Michigan, although their defense kept them within one score until the final whistle.
Sooners Stats
Oklahoma has scored 61 points through two games, with 420 passing yards and 270 on the ground. Most of the offensive damage came against UTEP, when the Sooners scored on their first eight possessions and rolled to a 51-point shutout.
The defense has been considerably more consistent, allowing only 17 points through two games. Oklahoma held UTEP to 198 total yards, then surrendered only 17 at Michigan despite the offense struggling for much of the afternoon.
Oklahoma’s offense stumbled in Ann Arbor; the defense apparently didn’t get that memo.
John Mateer has thrown for 414 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. Lloyd Avant leads the Sooners with 114 rushing yards, while Rocky Beers has emerged as the top receiving threat with 137 yards through two games.
Oklahoma has also generated six sacks and recovered two fumbles.
The Sooners are still looking for their first interception, but they’ve done plenty without one, allowing only two touchdowns all season.
Lobos Stats
New Mexico has exploded for 108 points through two games, scoring 38 against Central Michigan before dropping 70 on Mercyhurst. The Lobos erupted for a school-record 42 points in the second quarter alone last week.
The running game has driven much of that production, with New Mexico piling up 492 rushing yards. Scottre Humphrey leads the way with 174 yards and three touchdowns, while Kiefer Sibley has added 93 yards and a score.
Luke Moga has thrown for 198 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Troy Omeire leads the receiving group with 90 yards and a touchdown, while New Mexico has been able to spread the workload around during two comfortable wins.
The Lobos have been every bit as impressive defensively, allowing only 14 points.
They’ve produced eight sacks and five interceptions, although those numbers are about to get a much tougher stress test against an SEC roster in Norman.

Lobos vs. Sooners QB Matchup
John Mateer remains Oklahoma’s unquestioned starter after throwing for 414 yards and four touchdowns through two games.
He was sharp against UTEP, completing 11 of 17 passes for 225 yards and three scores before leaving with the game comfortably decided.
Michigan made life considerably less pleasant. Mateer finished with 189 passing yards and an interception, although he helped Oklahoma erase a 10-point halftime deficit before the Sooners eventually fell 17-10.
Mateer gets a softer landing this week, while Moga gets his first taste of Norman at night.
New Mexico has used both Luke Moga and Toa Fa’avae, with Moga throwing for 198 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Fa’avae has added 134 passing yards and another touchdown as the Lobos have comfortably rotated quarterbacks.
The difference Saturday is obvious: neither New Mexico quarterback has faced anything resembling Oklahoma’s defense. The Lobos have been able to dictate everything through two home blowouts, while Mateer has already seen a much different level of resistance at Michigan.
New Mexico Lobos vs. Oklahoma Sooners bottom line: New Mexico’s 2-0 start deserves respect, but Saturday is a major class jump against an Oklahoma defense that has given bettors very little to complain about.

Here is my Lobos Sooners free pick: Oklahoma -22.5 is my play Saturday night. New Mexico is 2-0 and has outscored Central Michigan and Mercyhurst 108-14, so the Lobos certainly haven’t done anything wrong. Norman is where the difficulty slider gets moved a few notches.
Oklahoma is coming off a 17-10 loss at Michigan, but the defense allowed only 17 points and gave up just 75 yards after halftime. That’s a nasty unit for a New Mexico offense getting its first road test.
Beating Mercyhurst by 63 is fun; taking that offense into Norman is a different Saturday entirely.
The Sooners have won 20 of their last 24 home games and covered 15 times over that stretch. They’ve also gone 9-3 ATS in their last 12 following a loss, which fits nicely with the bounce-back spot here.
New Mexico has been profitable as an underdog, and I’m not tossing that aside. The problem is Oklahoma can squeeze Luke Moga and the Lobos defensively while John Mateer gets a much friendlier assignment after dealing with Michigan.
Oklahoma already showed what it can do to an overmatched visitor when it buried UTEP 51-0.
Twenty-two and a hook is plenty, but OU has the defense to make it manageable.
