This Mountain West Conference matchup features Nevada traveling to New Mexico to face the Lobos.
Nevada has lost 2 in a row, and New Mexico is riding a 3 game winning streak.
Ty Gangi filled in at QB in the Wolfpack’s last game and played good. He was 27-40 for 300 yards and a touchdown pass. He also ran the ball 10 times for 35 yards and a score.
He is a threat to take off at any time and I expect the Junior QB to have another good game against the Lobos secondary.
James Butler has had at least 20 touches in each of the last 5 games. He is a hard running and can make catches out of the backfield.
Two weeks ago against Wyoming he had 14 carries for 73 yards and 2 scores, and also pitched in with 6 catches for 43 yards. This week I expect him to get another 20 touches and have over 100 yards from scrimmage.
Wyat Demps was the go to receiver against the Cowboys. The junior had 8 catches for 97 yards. He has not scored in 2 games but this week look for the Wolfpack to get him the ball early and often.
The Nevada defense was manhandled by the Cowboys.
The front seven was atrocious as they gave up 5 total touchdowns to the backfield, and 289 (!) yards to talented RB Brian Hill (he scored 3 of the 5 TDs).
If they want any shot at pulling off the upset stacking the box will need to be the game plan in this one.
New Mexico Fighting Lobos
New Mexico employs a run first offense, so having a quarterback with gaudy passing stats won’t be seen under this coaching staff.
QB Lamar Jordan was only 4-6 for 58 yards and a pick last week. He won’t be forced to make much of an impact in this one.
Tyrone Owens broke a lot of big runs last week against Hawaii, including a 72 yarder. The homerun hitter should get the ball at least 10 times in this one, and he will have another huge play to break the game open.
The other key player in the backfield is Teriyon Gipson. He finished the day with 17 carries for 73 yards and a score. He is averaging 116 yards per game and I have no worries in him passing his average this week.
As poor as the Nevada run defense has been both backs should have over 150 yards and a score on the ground.
The Lobos defense was solid all-around in the win against Hawaii.
They held the passing game to under 200 yards through the air and forced a turnover. I think they will be in for a battle this week against the Wolfpack passing attack.
This will come down to forcing turnovers, and I don’t see the Lobos holding up.
