HISTORY: SMU and Navy have a bit of an extended history, with a pair of four-game series prior to their time as AAC rivals. Navy leads the all-time series 13-10, but SMU has won the last two meetings.
Navy Midshipmen
Navy did not the 2022 season well, opening up with a pair of home losses. In the opener, the Midshipmen fell to nearby FCS school Delaware and mustered just 7 points. They welcomed Memphis to town for their AAC opener, and got overpowered offensively, losing by 24.
The tide has turned a bit for the Midshipmen. Navy (+16.5) responded after their bye week by picking up a big road win over East Carolina, covering in their Commander-in-Chief matchup with Air Force, and coming through big for loyal bettors for the third weekend in a row.

It’s never been about passing for Ken Niumatalolo and Navy, but Tai Lavatai has been able to push the ball down the field this season. Lavatai went 7/10 for 152 yards and a touchdown versus ECU, then threw a career-high 20 pass attempts against Air Force. If you know academy football, that’s impressive, especially in hard-fought efforts on the road.
Lavatai has thrown for 524 passing yards with two touchdowns to no interceptions, while rushing for 147 yards and three more touchdowns.
Navy has worked through multiple ball carriers to begin the season. Fullback Daba Fofana posted career-high of 159 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Tulsa, and he now leads Navy with 275 rushing yards. Running backs Maquel Haywood and Vincent Terrell II have provided some explosiveness. Haywood has 203 rushing yards, and leads the team with 5.1 yards per carry. Terrell II had a career-high 93 yards in the win over Tulsa.
Tight end Jayden Umbarger has been Tavatai’s security blanket, and he leads the team with eight catches.
SMU Mustangs
Rhett Lashlee jumped out to a 2-0 start with wins over in-state foes North Texas and Lamar, but the Mustangs have been parked ever since. The Mustangs dropped their next two non-conference games to Maryland and TCU, and they start AAC play on a flat note last week.
In Week 6, SMU lost to UCF in Orlando, 41-19, dropping to 1-4 against the spread this season.
Tanner Mordecai nearly through 40 touchdowns last season, but he has to cut down on the turnovers if SMU wants to get back on track. The fifth-year senior threw a pair of timely interceptions in both non-conference matchups with Maryland and TCU, and couldn’t find the endzone versus UCF.
Mordecai has thrown for 1,680 passing yards with 12 touchdowns to six interceptions.
Tre Siggers returned after leading the Mustangs in rushing in 2021, and he’s got the bulk of the workload early again this season. He scored in the season-opening win over his former school North Texas, and he scored three times last week against arch rival TCU. Siggers leads SMU with 229 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Rashee RIce has eclipse the 2,000-yard mark for his career with this great start. The senior wideout has established himself as the number one option, recording 130 yards or more in each of the first three games. Rice ranks among the nations leaders with 46 receptions and 687 receiving yards.
