The North Carolina State Wolfpack will travel and take on the Syracuse Orange from the JMA Wireless Dome this Saturday on the ACC Network. Syracuse will open as the three-point favorites here at home, with the total opening at 43.
HISTORY: These two schools have faced off in every season since Syracuse joined the ACC back in 2013. N.C. State leads the all-time series 13-2 after winning the last three matchups.
N.C. State Wolfpack
North Carolina State jumped out to a 4-0 start with strong non-conference wins over nearby foe East Carolina and Texas Tech. After defeating UConn by 31, the Wolfpack ran into some trouble in Death Valley, losing their first game of the season to Clemson. Dave Doeren’s team responded last weekend when they returned to Raleigh.
In Week 6, N.C. State defeated Florida State, 19-17, dropping to 3-3 against the spread this season.
N.C. State scores 30.5 points per game, while allowing 15.6 ppg.
Devin Leary’s pending absence is going to alter the season going forward. The star quarterback finished the FSU game in a sling, and it’s unlikely he suits up in Syracuse this Saturday. Jack Chambers will likely get the call this weekend, and the Charleston Southern transfer has about two years of starting experience.
The Wolfpack may have to lean on the ground game more going forward. Jordan Houston got a career-high 24 touches in win over the Seminoles, and he should be in for a lot of work if the defense can keep this one close. Houston has 260 rushing yards, while Demie Sumo-Karngbaye leads the team with 299 yards an three scores.
Thayer Thomas is special on the outside for the Wolfpack. The fifth-year receiver leads the team with 24 receptions for 301 receiving yards, and he’s their most dynamic player on the offensive side of the ball. Fellow fifth-year wideout Devin Carter is second on the team with 194 yards.
Syracuse Orange
With all of the success in Lawrence with the Jayhawks, a fellow prominent hoops program deserves some love for their hot start as well. Syracuse stifled Malik Cunningham and Louisville in their season opener, before traveling to Hartford and blowing out longtime Big East foe Connecticut by 34. The Orange then picked up a late-win over Purdue in Week 3, then returned to ACC play and defeated Virginia at home. The Orange flexed their muscles on an in-state foe a bit prior to their bye, leading to the rare mercy rule coming into play.
In Week 5, Syracuse shut out Wagner, 59-0, covering the massive 54-point margin.
Garrett Shrader looks good behind center for Cuse early. Shrader has hurt opponents with his arm and legs, and he’s got all-ACC potential. Shrader totaled 320 yards (236 pass, 94 rush), before scoring five touchdowns in the win over UConn. The junior QB then followed it up with a three-touchdown performance against Purdue, and completed all 17 of his passes versus Wagner.
Shrader has thrown for 1,224 passing yards with ten touchdowns to one interception through his first five starts, while also rushing for 219 yards and five scores.
Sean Tucker had a monster freshman season for Syracuse last season, going for 1,496 rushing yards and 12 scores, and he’s on-pace to do so again. Tucker gained 184 yards from scrimmage (100 rush, 84 rec) against Louisville, then rushed for 112 yards in the win over UConn. Tucker exploded for a career-high 232 yards in win over Wagner.
Tucker brings versatility, and he’s rushed for 546 yards and five touchdowns, while catching 17 passes for 169 receiving yards through the first four games.
Orondo Gadsen II’s rapport with Shrader has been impressive early. After scoring in his first career start versus Louisville, the sophomore wideout had big games in victories over Purdue and Virginia. Gadsen II racked up 112 yards and caught the game-winning touchdown against the Boilermakers, and he went for seven catches and 107 yards versus UVA last weekend.

Free Week 7 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
The status of Devin Leary will tilt this game, and since he’s unavailable and the Wolfpack have to come into the Carrier Dome with their backup quarterback. That will no doubt make life harder on Dave Doeren’s team offensively, and it may be tough for them to find a rhythm here. Their rallying effort after Leary’s injury was admirable, but it’s hard to imagine they can avoid passing the ball for four quarters.
Syracuse looks as good as ever under Dino Babers, and these next three weeks will tell us a lot. With a trip to Death Valley looming ten days away, look for the Orange to capitalize on Leary’s absence and reach 6-0 for the first time since 1988. A hostile Central New York crowd may give Jack Chambers a lot of trouble, and that may just be the biggest determining factor this weekend.
