Tigers vs. Jayhawks Gameday
The Border War returns Friday night with No. 23 Missouri traveling to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium to face Kansas. Both teams enter at 1-0 after rolling through FCS opponents in their season openers. Kickoff in Lawrence is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET on FOX.
Missouri opened with a 54-14 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, piling up 562 total yards while allowing only 198. The Tigers built a 40-0 halftime lead before turning the game over to their reserves.
Missouri returns to Lawrence for the first time since losing 13-3 there in 2005.
Kansas beat LIU 51-6 after overcoming a relatively quiet first quarter. The Jayhawks finished with 613 total yards, including 336 through the air and 277 on the ground, while limiting LIU to only 146.
Missouri won last year’s revival of the rivalry 42-31 in Columbia after trailing 21-6. The Tigers have won five of the last six Border Wars and lead the all-time series 58-54-9.

Missouri Tigers vs. Kansas Jayhawks Odds & Last 5
Missouri is laying 5.5 points on the road after opening around -6.5. The Tigers are roughly -225 on the moneyline, with Kansas around +184, while the total has settled at 49.5 after opening higher.
Both teams made easy work of their opening assignments.
Missouri scored on its first five offensive possessions against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and was never threatened. Kansas needed a little longer to get moving against LIU, leading only 6-0 after the first quarter before exploding for 24 points in the second.
Last year’s Border War provides a much different reference point. Kansas led three separate times before Missouri scored the final 14 points to turn a 31-28 fourth-quarter deficit into an 11-point victory.
Jayhawks Stats
Kansas couldn’t have produced much more offensively in its opener. The Jayhawks averaged 8.1 yards per play, converted 62 percent of their third downs and scored on all eight red-zone trips. They also finished the night without punting.
Isaiah Marshall was efficient in his first start.
Marshall completed 14 of 19 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He also rushed for 49 yards, giving Kansas another option in an offense that spread production throughout the lineup.
Yasin Willis led a deep rushing attack.
Willis carried 11 times for 72 yards and two touchdowns, while four other Jayhawks contributed to a 277-yard rushing performance. Nik McMillan made the biggest impact outside, catching six passes for 130 yards and a touchdown in his Kansas debut.
The Jayhawks were equally dominant defensively, holding LIU to 146 total yards and only 35 on the ground. Kansas recorded 11 tackles for loss and kept the Sharks out of the end zone, with LIU’s only points coming on two fourth-quarter field goals.
Tigers Stats
Missouri’s new-look offense started quickly against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Tigers accumulated 376 yards before halftime and finished with a 562-198 advantage in total offense. Most of the damage came while the game was still competitive.
Austin Simmons made an immediate impression in his Missouri debut.
The Ole Miss transfer completed 17 of 19 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns before giving way to Matt Zollers late in the first half. Simmons threw all four scores before halftime and didn’t turn the football over.
Donovan Olugbode quickly became his favorite target.
Olugbode caught eight passes for a career-high 116 yards and two touchdowns. Shaun Terry II caught two more touchdown passes, while Jamal Roberts led the rushing attack with 47 yards and a score on 13 carries.
Missouri’s defense gave Arkansas-Pine Bluff almost nothing early. The Golden Lions had only six total yards at halftime and were forced into four first-half three-and-outs. The Tigers now face a considerably different challenge against Kansas.

Tigers vs. Jayhawks QB Matchup
Austin Simmons and Isaiah Marshall both passed their first tests with little trouble, but they did it differently. Simmons attacked Arkansas-Pine Bluff aggressively through the air, while Marshall complemented an extremely balanced Kansas offense with his mobility.
Simmons’ efficiency immediately stands out.
Missouri trusted him on several third-and-long situations, and he consistently found open receivers without putting the ball in danger. Friday will provide a much better indication of how comfortably he can operate when the opposing defense can create pressure and force him deeper into the game.
Marshall gives Kansas a different kind of problem for Missouri.
His ability to pull the ball down and run adds another element to Andy Kotelnicki’s offense, particularly when the Jayhawks spread the field. Kansas doesn’t need him to dominate the passing statistics if the running game continues creating favorable situations.
Neither quarterback faced much adversity in Week 1, making this rivalry game the first meaningful measuring stick for both. Simmons has the stronger opening passing performance, while Marshall has home field and an offense that showed it can attack defenses several different ways.
Missouri Tigers vs. Kansas Jayhawks bottom line: Missouri brings the higher ranking and last year’s rivalry win, while Kansas gets home field with an offense that looked equally dangerous in its opener.

Here is my Tigers Jayhawks free pick: Over 49.5 is my play Friday night. We haven’t seen either offense against comparable competition yet, but both showed enough explosiveness in their openers to make this number look reachable.
Austin Simmons barely needed a half to throw four touchdowns in his Missouri debut. Kansas was slower out of the gate against LIU, then scored on seven of its final eight possessions and finished without punting.
That gives me plenty to work with at 49.5.
Both quarterbacks have enough weapons around them to turn a few big plays into touchdowns.
Isaiah Marshall brings another dimension with his legs, and Kansas produced five rushing touchdowns in Week 1. Missouri also showed it can strike quickly through the air, so neither offense has to string together long drives all night.
The rivalry angle helps me here, too. Last year’s game produced 73 points, and Kansas still put 31 on the board despite Missouri controlling the finish.
I don’t need anything close to another 42-31 finish. A competitive game in the high 20s gets us where we need to go, and the 5.5-point spread suggests Kansas should contribute rather than leave Missouri carrying the total.
