2016-17 Football Previews – (SEC) – Tigers
Looking for 2016 Missouri Tigers predictions? After a less than great debut the Missouri Tigers have more than handled themselves since joining the SEC, especially in 2013 and 2014 when they won division titles. Unfortunately things came undone last season with a 5-7 record. Making matters worse coach Gary Pinkel has been lost due to personal health reasons.

2016 Missouri Tigers Handicapping
He had been critical to the success of the program and its ability to slide into the SEC and compete with the big boys.
His disciple is now in charge but I think it is fair to say the program is at a crossroads.
Even if Pinkel was still on the sidelines this was probably going to be a tough year in the SEC East. Tennessee is primed, Florida is tough and Georgia is hopefully getting the shot in the arm they need from their own new coach.
For HC Barry Odom he is hoping that they can find some sense of stability at quarterback and keep the the defense ramped up. If that happens they have a shot at being more middle of the pack instead of battling Kentucky at the bottom. This is Odom’s first chance at being an HC, and it is at his alma mater so hopefully things work out.
2016 Missouri Tigers Predictions: Team Strengths
Odom is the former defensive coordinator and the defense has 8 returning starters from a unit that was fifth in the nation in scoring, allowing just 16ppg.

The Tigers seem to have a knack for developing disruptive rush ends and Charles Harris is the next in that line. Last season he had 7 sacks and 18.5 tackles for losses.
The whole defensive line returns so even though teams might want to give him more attention they do so at their peril, his bookend Walter Brady also had seven sacks as just a freshman a year ago.
Mizzou has some good athletes at receiver so if QB Drew Lock is ready they won’t hold him back.WR Chris Black was originally at Alabama but injuries held him back.
He is looking to bust out in a big way and has the talent to do so.
2016 Missouri Tigers Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Odom may have a dominant defense again this season but you need an offense to win consistently.
The Maty Mauk saga is done but Drew Lock did not run with the job last season and his backup is another sophomore who has never thrown a pass in a game.

Lock was highly touted and is certainly not the first QB to be in over his head as a frosh but it is not automatic that he gets better.
A stronger running game would help but only one starter returns on the offensive line for the Tigers. Leading rusher Ish Witter returns but he is expected to be supplanted by transfer RB Alex Ross from Oklahoma.
He was another highly touted prospect who did not pan out with his original team.
I note this in every profile where there is a new coach, you just never know how they will be when everything is on their shoulders.
This seems like a pretty good situation because expectations are low but some guys are better as coordinators.
2016 Missouri Tigers Prediction:
Missouri will be interesting this season. Their defense should be very good once again and it could be even better than a year ago when they were 5th in points allowed and 6th in yards.
If those kinds of numbers hold there is nobody on their schedule they can’t beat and it will make them a very intriguing underdog option all season long.
Their whole season will hinge on whether they can get the offense going at all this year. Last year they averaged a pathetic 13.6 points per game – that is not a typo.
When you are not even scoring two TDs a game then suddenly any team is still in the game at the end and anything can happen.
Their schedule is tough this season with conference road games against LSU, Florida and Tennessee. All ranked teams that have playoff aspirations. They also start the season at West Virginia.

It will be a good barometer game as the Mountaineers are a pretty solid offensive group.
If the defense looks as expected and the offense is a serious threat than maybe Tigers can get over that win total. Otherwise it is going to be tough.
