Bears vs. Hilltoppers Gameday
Missouri State heads to Bowling Green Thursday night for its Conference USA opener against Western Kentucky at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM ET on CBS Sports Network.
Casey Woods’ Bears enter 1-3 after a bye following their 34-24 loss at SMU. Missouri State is still looking for its first road win.
Both teams need a conference win. Neither has exactly spent September frightening the rest of CUSA.
Western Kentucky is 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play under Tyson Helton. The Hilltoppers opened CUSA action with a 34-13 loss at New Mexico State, with their lone victory coming 52-7 over Mercyhurst.
These programs aren’t strangers. It’s Week 6, Missouri State Bears vs. Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, hopefully we get a great matchup.
WKU won 27-22 in Springfield last season after Missouri State produced 414 yards but couldn’t finish the comeback. It was the Hilltoppers’ ninth straight win in the series and pushed their all-time advantage to 9-2.

Missouri State Bears vs. Western Kentucky Hilltoppers Odds & Last 5
Western Kentucky opened as a 2.5-point home favorite, with the Hilltoppers -139 on the moneyline and Missouri State +115. The opening total was 56.5.
Missouri State has dropped two straight since beating Lindenwood 48-14. The Bears lost 30-24 to Marshall before falling 34-24 at SMU, where they trailed by only three early in the fourth quarter.
Western Kentucky’s recent form has been rougher.
The Hilltoppers have lost four of five, with three defeats coming by at least 21 points. The 52-7 win over Mercyhurst is the obvious exception because apparently somebody had to enjoy September.
Last week’s loss at New Mexico State brought more of the same. WKU managed only 43 rushing yards, committed 84 yards in penalties and scored one offensive TD.

Hilltoppers Stats
Western Kentucky has scored 99 points through five games while allowing 198. The passing game has been the more productive side of the offense, with 1,165 yards compared to 572 on the ground.
The Hilltoppers spread the ball around at New Mexico State, with 10 players catching a pass. True freshman Jonathan Stafford Jr. produced his first 100-yard receiving game.
The problem has been turning movement into points. Penalties, negative plays and stalled drives have repeatedly made life harder than necessary.
That’s a lot of work for not enough scoreboard.
The defense hasn’t supplied many rescue missions either, allowing at least 34 points in four of five games. There’s enough talent here to expect better than 1-4, but eventually WKU has to stop looking ready to turn the corner and actually make the turn.
Bears Stats
Missouri State has scored 96 points through four games and allowed 128. The Bears have been considerably more competitive since getting flattened 50-0 at Texas A&M in the opener.
They followed with a 48-14 win over Lindenwood before losing by six to Marshall and 10 at SMU.
Skyler Locklear has given the offense some stability, completing 70.2% of his passes. Isaiah Myers leads the receiving corps with 342 yards and two TD’s, while Breezy Dubar has supplied 209 rushing yards and two scores.
Missouri State survived College Station and Dallas. Bowling Green probably won’t feel like visiting Mordor.
The Bears scored 24 against both Marshall and SMU after putting 48 on Lindenwood. There’s been some defensive progress too.
Linebacker Jared Lloyd enters Thursday averaging 11.3 tackles per game. Joel Boamah also returned an interception 60 yards for a TD to help Missouri State jump ahead 10-0 at SMU.
Now the Bears need to turn those flashes into a complete road performance.
Bears vs. Hilltoppers QB Matchup
Western Kentucky’s QB situation deserves more care than simply stamping one name QB1. Rodney Tisdale Jr. handled most of the passing work at New Mexico State and threw for 314 yards, while Brock Glenn remained involved and scored WKU’s lone offensive TD.
Tisdale offers the more traditional passing threat. Glenn changes the picture with his legs and already has four rushing TD’s this season.
Missouri State has been steadier with Locklear.
He’s protected the football well and gives Woods an efficient distributor rather than a QB who has to manufacture everything himself. Henry Belin IV also saw meaningful work at SMU and led a late 70-yard TD drive.

WKU’s problem is simpler: the passing production has to start turning into touchdowns instead of attractive yardage totals in losing box scores.
There’s a difference between moving the football and making it matter. The Hilltoppers have become painfully familiar with it.
That’s where Thursday gets interesting from a handicapping standpoint.
Missouri State needs Locklear to stay efficient and take what WKU gives him. The Hilltoppers need whichever QB is taking the snaps to finish drives instead of wasting them.
Neither QB needs to become a superhero. Both need considerably fewer empty possessions.
Missouri State Bears vs. Western Kentucky Hilltoppers bottom line: both offenses have exploitable matchups, and whichever side finally turns available yards into touchdowns should have the biggest say in who gets its first CUSA win.

Here is my Bears Hilltoppers free pick: I’m playing Over 56.5. Neither defense has earned enough trust from me to make 57 points feel like some outrageous request.
Western Kentucky has gone over in five of its last six games following a loss, and that’s the trend I want working for me here.
The Hilltoppers can move the football through the air, but finishing drives and keeping opponents off the scoreboard have been entirely different adventures. Missouri State has scored at least 24 points in three straight games, so I’m not asking the Bears to suddenly discover an offense Thursday night.
I’m not asking either defense to help me here. Frankly, I’d prefer they stay out of the way.
The game state works too. If WKU finally gets its offense rolling at home, Missouri State has already shown it can keep throwing and scoring while playing from behind. If the Bears jump ahead, I trust the Hilltoppers to stay aggressive rather than spend the night trying to win 20-17.
At 1-4, WKU isn’t exactly protecting a dynasty over there. That’s where this total starts looking pretty friendly.
Get me into the high 20’s on both sides, add a couple of short fields or one busted coverage, and we’re knocking on the door.
And if I’m sitting on 51 or 52 late in the fourth quarter, these are exactly the two defenses I want deciding whether I make money. Nobody needs to become Alabama for a night.
Give me Bears-Hilltoppers Over 56.5.
