Although it was against a rock solid opponent in Auburn, the Bulldogs will want to be forgetting about that last game as their defense was shredded by Bo Nix and Co. for 578 yards. They now get a much easier spot, albeit on the road, against one of the biggest disappointments of the year.
Unlike their opponents today the Volunteers won’t just want to forget about their last game against Georgia, but the entirety of the season. It has also been announced that Brian Maurer will remain the starting QB, so just how much of an improvement can we expect given how he played against Georgia?
Mississippi State Bulldogs
The Bulldogs did not have a lot of success in that last game against Auburn, but on the other hand no one really expected them to. The Bulldogs do, however, have a bit of a quarterback dilemma on their hands and seem to be holding their cards close to their chest in terms of who the starter will be come Sunday.

It might not matter a ton, though, as both of these Bulldogs QB’s can play, so it wouldn’t be crazy to expect a good game out of whoever is named the starter. It is a bit hard to fully handicap and get a good grasp on just how good or bad this team is as their season has gone about as expected beating the teams they should beat and also losing to the ones they should lose against.
The only game that stuck out for me was the win two games back against Kentucky where their defense really decided to show up. They restricted the University of Kentucky to just 1-12 on third downs and were awesome in the secondary only allowing 180 passing yards.
Garrett Schrader was the starter in that one and although he was not blowing anyone away through the air he did prove his worth as he led the team in rushing going for over 100 yards. I would expect him to start here and if he does I am sure they will use that rushing ability and try to boss time of possession and wear out this Volunteer’s defense.
Tennessee Volunteers
The Volunteers were thoroughly man-handled by Georgia, but there was one big positive they could take out of that last game.

Brian Maurer, a freshman, started at quarterback for them in that game and he looked pretty darn good given the defense he faced that day.
He looked like he might provide a ray of hope for this struggling program going into the future as he threw for nearly 300 yards 2 TD’s and a pick. He obviously gets a much easier spot at home against the Bulldogs defense. Due to that fact it is a bit hard to know if that was just a one time fluke or the kid is legit, but some of those questions will be answered come this Saturday.
On the defensive side of things it is really hard to have anything nice to say as for a program this big their defense really is not up to snuff. They have gotten lit up by everyone they have played so far except their game against Chattanooga, which isn’t really saying much.
If this team is going to succeed it is going to be on the offensive side of things so, once again, will Maurer be the answer?

Free Week 7 NCAA Football Pick
I believe in Maurer and believe he will breath a bit of new life into this Volunteer’s offense. I also am not totally convinced about either of these teams defensively. The number also seems very fair at 53, so I am going to be going with the over in this one come Saturday.
