The Mississippi State Bulldogs will travel to Lexington and take on the Kentucky Wildcats from Kroger Field this Saturday night on the SEC Network. Mississippi State will open as the 4-point road favorites here, with the total opening at 49.
HISTORY: These two SEC schools have faced off in every season since 1990. Mississippi State leads the all-time series 25-24, after a dominant stretch led by Dan Mullen, but they’ve traded each of the past six matchups and won last year in Starkville.
Mississippi State Bulldogs
Mississippi State looks like the real deal here in Mike Leach’s third season. The Bulldogs picked up non-conference wins over rival Memphis and Arizona but they found trouble in Death Valley the following Saturday. After losing to LSU, the Bulldogs picked up three double-digit wins in Stark Vegas.
In Week 6, Mississippi State defeated Arkansas, 40-17, improving to 4-2 against this spread this season.
Mississippi State is scoring 38.5 points per game, while allowing 21.2 ppg.
Leach has found his guy in junior quarterback Will Rogers, and we’ve seen this previously with Kliff Kingsbury, Graham Harrell, and Anthony Gordon. Year 3 in the Air Raid means big things for the QB, and Rogers has been sharp and lived up to the hype early. He’s tossed more than four touchdowns three times already, and he’s going to give the Wildcats all they can handle here.
Rogers leads the entire country with 2,110 passing yards with 22 touchdowns to three interceptions.
Dillon Johnson and Jo’quavious Marks handle the backfield work for the Bulldogs. Johnson leads the team with 402 rushing yards, and he gained a season-high 100 yards and scored twice in the win over Arkansas. Marks scored in each of the first three games of the seasons, and he’s gained 193 yards with a team-high four touchdowns. Both backs are active in the passing game as well, with Johnson catching a 27 receptions and Marks recording 23 catches.
Rogers has spread the ball out tremendously early. Rara Thomas leads the team in receiving yards (368) after a big game against the Aggies. Caleb Ducking and Rufus Harvey both have 28 receptions, with the former having a team-lead seven touchdown catches.
Kentucky Wildcats
Kentucky jumped out to a 4-0 start that included a big road win in the Swamp over Florida, but the month of October has been a bit spooky to them thus far. The Wildcats played Ole Miss very well in Oxford, but they came up short. An injury to Will Levis in that bout led to an unseen loss last weekend.
In Week 6, Kentucky lost to South Carolina at home, 24-14. dropping to 3-3 ATS this season.
Will Levis’ return may just calm everything down for the Bluegrass. He’s a gamer, and he’s proven capable of winning big games over the past two seasons. The veteran quarterback was flawless in the win over Northern Illinois, tossing for 303 yards with four touchdowns, and he played well even after injuring his finger versus Ole Miss.
Levis has thrown for 1,405 passing yards, with 12 touchdowns to four interceptions, and a pair of rushing scores through five starts.
Chris Rodriguez’ return has led to a revival of the run game for UK. Rodriguez ran for 1,272 yards last season, and he gained 126 yards in his second game back versus SC. Veteran back Kavosiey Smoke took on a bigger role in CRod’s absence, but he may miss this bout after missing the South Carolina game. Smoke leads the team with 269 rushing yards on the season.
Levis’ has a whole new crop of pass catchers this season, and they’ve all meshed quickly. Tayvion Robinson, a Virginia Tech transfer, torched the MAC in the two matchups with the conference, combining for 13 catches and 273 yards during those games. Hometown frosh Dane Key scored in each of the first three games, and he’s second on the team in receptions (19) and yards (291). Fellow freshman Barion Brown caught a pair of touchdowns last weekend, and provides a ton of big play ability.

With Will Levis set to go that makes this contest a lot interesting. We could be in for an amazing quarterback battle that could generate quite a few points. Kentucky is going to make things tough on for the nation’s leading passer Will Rogers. In return, the Wildcats’ pro style attack may feature a bit more passes. The two best signal callers in the SEC (outside of Bryce Young) could give scouts a show Saturday night.
