Minnesota has a great chance to get their first win of the season when they travel to Champaign on Saturday afternoon. The Illini are also winless, but have been ravaged by COVID especially in the QB room.
The Golden Gophers didn’t look great on the road last week, and Illinois will be playing their second straight home game. The consensus is Minnesota by a lot in this one however.
Minnesota Golden Gophers
Minnesota really needs to find their defense on Saturday. The betting total is 64 despite Illinois being down to their 4th or 5th string QB, very much an indictment on a Golden Gophers team allowing 47.0 ppg.
The Golden Gophers were especially steam rolled by Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa last week. The Terrapins budding star threw for 394 yards and 3 TD and added another 64 yards and 2 TD on the ground.
For as bad as their defense has been, Minnesota does have the offense to cover the 7 points and then some. The Golden Gophers were good enough to win last week against Maryland, with Mo Ibrahim running for 200+ yards and 4 TD.
QB Tanner Morgan was just 18/31 in the season opening 49-24 home loss to Michigan, but he was his usual accurate self against Maryland, going 10/15. The Illinois defense has struggled against the pass allowing 300+ per game.
Illinois Fighting Illini
Minnesota has struggled with two mobile QBs in their first two games. Not only did Maryland’s Tagovailoa account for 5 TD last week, Michigan’s Joe Milton had 225 yards passing and 52 on the ground with 2 total TDs.
That bodes well for Illinois’ Coran Taylor, who was thrust into action at QB last week. The freshman didn’t play bad, going 17/29 for 273 with 2 TD/2INT and added 32 yards on the ground.
Illinois could struggle with the accurate Moran on Saturday. This is an Illini secondary that let Wisconsin’s Graham Mertz go 20/21 with 5 TDs in his first career start in the season opener.
Purdue’s Aidan O’Connell was also 29/35 for 371 yards and 2 TD last week. So far, that’s 49/56 (88%) through two games for opposing QBs against the Illinois defense.

Illinois will stay close for awhile, but PJ Fleck’s team needs a win. This could be the game the Golden Gophers open up the passing game.
