Spartans vs. Fighting Irish Gameday
Michigan State gets its first road test Saturday night when the Spartans visit No. 3 Notre Dame at Notre Dame Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET on NBC, with the Megaphone Trophy back on the line for the first time since 2017.
The Spartans are 2-0 under first-year coach Pat Fitzgerald after beating Toledo 30-20 and Eastern Michigan 35-7. Michigan State pulled away from EMU with 21 unanswered second-half points and finished with 472 total yards.
Michigan State handled two MAC opponents; South Bend is where the difficulty setting gets considerably less friendly.
Notre Dame is also 2-0 and ranked third in both major polls. The Irish opened by beating Wisconsin 41-13 at Lambeau Field, then dismantled Rice 52-0 in their home opener.
This rivalry has some mileage on it.
Saturday is the 80th meeting, with Notre Dame leading the series 49-29-1. The Irish won 38-18 in 2017, but Michigan State took the last meeting in South Bend 36-28 one year earlier.

That’s quite a tax for two 2-0 teams.
Michigan State beat Toledo by 10 before handling Eastern Michigan by 28. The Spartans haven’t faced anything resembling Notre Dame yet, but they’ve scored at least 30 points in both games and have protected the football well.
Notre Dame has been considerably more destructive. The Irish beat Wisconsin by 28 and Rice by 52, outscoring their first two opponents 93-13.
Fighting Irish Stats
Notre Dame has scored 93 points through two games, with CJ Carr leading an efficient passing attack. The junior has completed 35 of 49 passes for 492 yards and six touchdowns without an interception.
Carr barely needed the second half against Rice.
He completed 16 of 20 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns before his afternoon ended early. Jordan Faison caught two of those scores, while the Irish piled up 478 total yards in the 52-0 demolition.
Carr has six touchdowns and no picks, which isn’t leaving opposing defenses much to bargain with.
The running game hasn’t been nearly as dominant. Aneyas Williams leads Notre Dame with 119 yards and two touchdowns, while the Irish have totaled 229 rushing yards through two games.
The defense hasn’t needed much help.
Notre Dame has allowed only 13 points and forced six turnovers, including five recoveries. Wisconsin managed 13 in the opener before Rice was held to 128 total yards and never reached the scoreboard.
Spartans Stats
Michigan State has scored 65 points while producing 461 passing yards and 409 on the ground. That balance has helped Fitzgerald start 2-0 without asking his quarterback to carry everything.
Alessio Milivojevic has completed 38 of 54 passes for 417 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He’s been efficient, but Saturday represents a rather rude upgrade in opposing defenses.
Cam Edwards has been the engine on the ground.
The UConn transfer has rushed for 250 yards and three touchdowns, including 152 yards and two scores against Eastern Michigan. Michigan State finished that game with 258 rushing yards, its highest total since 2022.
The Spartans have allowed 27 points through two games.
They’ve also generated six sacks, led by Eli Coenen with three. Michigan State shut out Eastern Michigan after halftime last week, turning a 14-7 game into a comfortable 35-7 win.

Spartans vs. Fighting Irish QB Matchup
CJ Carr enters Saturday completing 71.4% of his passes for 492 yards and six touchdowns without an interception. After throwing two scores against Wisconsin, he carved up Rice for four more while completing 80% of his attempts.
He hasn’t been giving defenses freebies.
Carr owns the bigger résumé, but Milivojevic has been careful enough with the football to keep this interesting.
Alessio Milivojevic has been similarly clean, throwing for 417 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He completed 12 of 20 passes for 170 yards and two scores against Eastern Michigan while Michigan State leaned heavily on Edwards and the running game.
That formula makes sense again Saturday.
Michigan State doesn’t want Milivojevic dropping back 45 times with Notre Dame’s pass rush coming after him. Edwards shortening the game and keeping Carr parked on the sideline would make life considerably easier.
Cam Fancher gives Michigan State another option and completed all six of his passes last week. Notre Dame has Noah Grubbs behind Carr, but neither team enters Saturday looking for a quarterback debate.
Spartans vs. Fighting Irish bottom line: Notre Dame has spent two weeks beating opponents senseless, but 29.5 asks the Irish to do more than win the Megaphone Trophy; it asks them to send Michigan State home with the receipt.

Michigan State hasn’t faced this level yet. Still, the Spartans have scored 65 points, Cam Edwards is averaging 125 rushing yards per game, and Alessio Milivojevic has yet to throw an interception.
Notre Dame can dominate this game without covering this number.
Twenty-nine and a hook buys Michigan State a whole lot of room for Notre Dame dominance.
The Irish have allowed only 13 points, and CJ Carr has six touchdown passes without a pick. That’s the scary part, because Michigan State can’t spend the night handing Notre Dame short fields and expect my ticket to survive.
The Spartans have covered six of their last seven as underdogs, and they’ve won the last meeting played in South Bend. I’m not expecting Pat Fitzgerald to stroll in and steal the Megaphone Trophy, but his teams have made a career out of being annoying when the other sideline has better toys.
Twenty-nine and a hook buys plenty of ugly.
Give me Edwards shortening the game, Milivojevic protecting the football and Michigan State hanging around long enough to make the fourth quarter matter to bettors.
