Hurricanes vs. Demon Deacons Gameday
Miami heads to Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium on Friday night for its ACC opener against Wake Forest. Both teams enter Week 3 at 2-0, with the Hurricanes ranked No. 5 in the AP poll after overwhelming their first two opponents. The Hurricanes opened with a 45-6 road victory at Stanford before hammering Florida A&M 77-7.
Miami has outscored those opponents 122-13 and already owns a road victory entering its first conference game.
Wake Forest has taken a much different path to 2-0. The Demon Deacons beat Akron 38-16 at home before surviving Purdue 38-36 in double overtime, scoring the tying touchdown with 20 seconds remaining in regulation before finishing the comeback.
Friday gives unbeaten Wake Forest its first ACC test against the nation’s fifth-ranked team.
Miami won the most recent meeting 42-14 in 2024 and has taken eight straight in the series. Wake’s last victory over the Hurricanes came in 1944, although the programs have met only 13 times overall. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET on ESPN.

Miami opened around a 19.5-point favorite, but the market has pushed the Hurricanes through the three-touchdown range at some books. Wake Forest +20.5 remains available in the market, while other shops have moved Miami to -21 or higher. The moneyline leaves little doubt about which side oddsmakers expect to win, with Miami priced as a massive road favorite.
The total has also climbed considerably from an opener around 50.5 and is now sitting in the mid-50s at several books.
Miami has covered comfortably in both games, beating Stanford by 39 points and Florida A&M by 70. The Hurricanes have scored 45 or more in each victory and have yet to trail this season.
Wake Forest also enters unbeaten after beating Akron by 22 and Purdue by two. The Demon Deacons piled up 484 yards against the Boilermakers, including 239 on the ground, and showed they could execute late by forcing overtime with a touchdown in the final 20 seconds.

Wake Forest has scored 76 points through two games while averaging 485 yards of offense. The Demon Deacons have produced 581 passing yards and 389 on the ground, giving offensive coordinator Rob Ezell balance entering the biggest test of the young season.
Gio Lopez has settled in as Wake Forest’s starting quarterback after transferring from North Carolina. He has completed 37 of 59 passes for 575 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, while adding 98 rushing yards and two more scores. Carlos Hernandez has quickly become his most dangerous downfield target, catching 11 passes for 253 yards and a touchdown.
Ty Clark III leads the rushing attack with 141 yards on only 19 carries, while Deuce Lawrence has added 97 yards and a score.
The defense has been much less convincing than the offense. Wake has allowed 52 points and surrendered 36 to Purdue, including 473 total yards.
The Demon Deacons have generated some pressure up front, but Miami presents a major step up after Wake allowed the Boilermakers to average better than six yards per play.

Miami’s offense has been devastating through two games, producing 1,405 total yards and 122 points. The Hurricanes have thrown for 854 yards while adding 551 on the ground, averaging better than nine yards per offensive play. Darian Mensah has been nearly flawless since transferring from Duke, completing 41 of 45 passes for 653 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions.
Malachi Toney has been his primary big-play target with 16 catches for 330 yards and four scores.
Miami has been equally dangerous when it keeps the ball on the ground. Javian Mallory has 173 rushing yards on just 13 carries, while Mark Fletcher Jr. has added 145 yards and two touchdowns.
The defense has allowed only 13 points through two games and hasn’t surrendered an offensive touchdown since the opener at Stanford. Miami also held Florida A&M without an offensive score, with the Rattlers’ only touchdown coming on a fumble return. That combination has allowed Miami to control games almost immediately.

Darian Mensah is firmly established as Miami’s starting quarterback after transferring from Duke during the offseason. He has completed an extraordinary 91.1% of his passes through two games, throwing for 653 yards and eight touchdowns without an interception.
Mensah was especially sharp against Florida A&M, completing 14 of 15 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns before Miami turned the game over to its backups. He has not been sacked through two starts, another indication of how efficiently the Hurricanes have operated. Wake Forest counters with Gio Lopez, who has completed 37 of 59 attempts for 575 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
Lopez also brings a running element, carrying 20 times for 98 yards and two scores through his first two starts with the Demon Deacons.
He was central to Wake’s comeback at Purdue. Lopez threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns in the double-overtime victory while also helping Wake generate enough offense to overcome multiple second-half deficits.
His ability to extend plays becomes particularly important against the speed and pressure Miami can bring defensively.

Here is my Hurricanes Demon Deacons free pick: I’m taking the Demon Deacons +20.5. Miami has looked ridiculous through two games, but we’re getting nearly three touchdowns with an unbeaten Wake Forest team playing its ACC opener at home on Friday night.
Wake showed me something at Purdue. The Demon Deacons went on the road, survived double overtime and scored 38 points behind an offense that produced 484 yards. That’s useful when the handicap is about staying inside a big number rather than winning outright.
Wake has enough offensive juice to make Miami earn every bit of this three-touchdown price.
Miami is obviously the tougher assignment. The Hurricanes have outscored Stanford and Florida A&M 122-13, and their offense has been explosive through both the air and on the ground.
Still, this is Miami’s first ACC game after two comfortable wins where the outcome was never seriously threatened. Wake has already played a tight fourth quarter and overtime game, and that experience matters when I’m taking this many points.
The Demon Deacons don’t need to trade touchdowns all night. They need enough sustained drives to avoid getting buried and force Miami to keep its starters working into the second half.
I’ll grab the big home number in my college football handicapping approach. Give me Wake Forest +20.5.
