The Miami Hurricanes will travel to Blacksburg and face the Virginia Tech Hokies from Lane Stadium this Saturday on CSS. Texas A&M will open as the five-point favorites to win at home, with the total opening at 48.5
HISTORY: The Miami/Virginia Tech rivalry dates back to their time as fierce rivals during the peak of the Big East Conference. Both schools were at their peaks in the 90s, and this matchup was often scheduled late in the year due to it annually having implications. The Hurricanes and Hokies have faced off in every season since 1992, and Miami leads the all-time series 24-15, after winning the four of the last five matchups.
Miami Hurricanes
The Mario Cristobal era has started a bit rough. After getting off to a 2-0 start, Miami lost to Texas A&M in College Station, which wasn’t horrible at all, but their Week 4 effort was one for the books. Miami let Middle Tennessee State come into Hard Rock Stadium and beat them by 14. That was an all-time low for one of the most glorified programs ever, and their misery continued last weekend.
In Week 6. Miami lost to UNC at home, 27-24, dropping to 1-4 against the spread this season.
Miami has score 32.8 points per game, while allowing 21.8 ppg.
Tyler Van Dyke enjoyed a successful 2021 season, but 2022 has started a bit slower. The sophomore quarterback struggled versus A&M and Middle Tennessee State, barely completing 50% of his passes and throwing a pair of costly INTs versus the Blue Raiders. Van Dyke did toss for a career-high 496 yards in a shootout with UNC last weekend, but it was a losing effort.
Van Dyke has thrown for 1,297 passing yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions through five games.
Henry Parrish Jr. has come in and got the bulk of the carries early for the Canes. The Ole Miss transfer scored three times in his debut against Bethune, and he followed it up by gaining over 100 total yards in the win over Southern Miss. Parrish Jr. is leading the team 366 rushing yards and four touchdowns, and Thaddius Franklin Jr. has complimented him well, gaining 178 yards and scoring a tea-lead five touchdowns through the first five games.
Xavier Restrepo’s injury led to the wideout room needing to step up. TIght end Will Mallory leads the team in receptions (20) and receiving yards (242) after a big game versus UNC. Sophomore wideout Key’shawn Smith leads the wideout room with 192 yards.
Virginia Tech Hokies
The first half of the season but a bit rough for the Virginia Tech football program. The Hokies split their first four games of the season, and didn’t leave much room optimism. They opened the season with a last-minute loss to in-state foe Old Dominion, and despite winning their ACC opener against Boston College, they were embarrassed at Lane Stadium by longtime rival West Virginia. A pair of road trips to Chapel Hill and Pittsburgh have added more misery, as a 31-point loss to UNC was followed up by another double-digit defeat.
In Week 6, Virginia Tech lost to Pitt, 45-29, failing to capitalize on the 14-point underdog spread.
Virginia Tech has scored 20.1 points per game, while allowing 26.2 ppg.
Grant Wells has endured his share of growing pains early. The Marshall transfer has looked rough in each outing, and he will more than likely struggle against a hungry Miami defense. Wells has passed for 1,260 yards with six touchdowns to seven interceptions this season.
Tech’s run game has been underwhelming this season, clocking in at just 112 rushing yards per game. That will have to elevate as the temperatures drop and ACC play begins. Keshawn King starred in the opener against ODU, gaining 133 total yards, but he’s been quiet since, posting a ream-lead 257 rushing yards in five games. Sixth-year back Jalen Holston has rushed for 152 yards and two scores in his relief.
Seniors Kaleb Smith and Nick Gallo have been Wells primary targets early. Smith leads the team with 402 receiving yards after a career-high 152 yards versus Pitt last weekend. Gallo, a 6’4 tight end, has 19 receptions and serves as a security blanket.

If this was a night game at Lane Stadium, Tech would have a bit more support here, but without that added element, they come into this one a over matched. Grant Wells will struggle against this defense, and the turnover chain will surely make an appearance this weekend.
