The Memphis Tigers will travel to Annapolis and take on the Navy Midshipmen for both schools American Athletic Conference opener this weekend. Memphis is favored to win by 6 here on the road, with the total opening at 50.5.
Navy and Memphis have crossed paths in each of the past seven seasons, with the Tigers owning a 4-3 series lead. Memphis has won three matchups in row, including a 35-17 victory at home last season.
Memphis Tigers
Memphis could not keep up with their border rivals Mississippi State in the season opener. The Tigers gave up over 500 yards of total offense, and loss to the Bulldogs, 49-23. They’ll face a much simpler offense in Navy this weekend, so there’s optimism for a quick turnaround here.
Seth Henigan returned after a solid freshman season behind center, but struggled to move the ball against a feisty Bulldogs defense last weekend. Henigan didn’t turn the ball over, but he only threw for 165 passing yards and one touchdown.
Memphis couldn’t get anything going on the ground in th opener either. Returning leader rusher Brandon Thomas gained 33 rushing yards on a limited seven carries. First-year Tiger Jeyvon Ducker gained 70 yards on six touches, including an electric 50-yard touchdown run.
Senior back Asa Martin gained 78 total yards, pacing the team with 58 receiving yards along the way. Eddie Lewis led the pass catchers with six catches for 38 yards and a touchdown, and the senior wideout will likely be Henigan’s favorite target this season.
Navy Midshipmen
Navy was up-ended in their season opener by FCS-power Delaware. The Midshipmen and the Blue Hens played a hard fought game that only combined for 21 points, and saw no scoring in the fourth quarter. Delaware (+11.5) picked up the underdog victory, 14-7.
Navy’s never been known to toss the pigskin, but they’re going to need more from the quarterback position if they want to compete this season. Tai Lavatai’s passing numbers aren’t important, but turning 18 carries into just 34 yards will have to improve immediately.
Lavatai wasn’t the only member of the Academy to struggle on the ground. First-year fullbacks Daba Fofana and Logan Point struggled to produce with their opportunities, both receiving double-digit carries and averaging less than 3.3 yards per carry.
Sophomore back Maquel Haywood gave the offense some life with over 100 yards of total offense (28 rush, 77 rec), while senior Mark Walker will likely serve as the team’s top wideout again this season.
Navy may have a lot more luck this weekend with their physical ground game, and their defense should follow up on what was a strong performance in Week 1 after giving up just 202 yards of total offense against Delaware.
