The Memphis Tigers will travel to Greenville and take on the East Carolina Pirates from Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium this Saturday night. ECU will open as the six-point favorites here at home, with the total opening at 59.5.
HISTORY: Memphis and ECU were fierce rivals back in their time in Conference USA. The Pirates lead the all-time series 16-8 after winning the last seven C-USA matchups, and they won last year’s meeting by one point in Memphis.
Memphis Tigers
Memphis responded to a season opening loss to border rival Mississippi State by closing the first month of action with four wins. The Tigers opened AAC play with a road win over Navy, then they took down Arkansas State in their home opener. Ryan Silverfield’s team prevailed in another shootout against North Texas, and picked up a 21-point win over Temple after trailing at halftime. Their luck ran a bit thin last week after controlling most of the football game.
In Week 6, Memphis lost a nailbiter to Houston at home, 33-32, behind a last-minute touchdown pass from Cougs QB Clayton Tune.
Memphis scores 34.1 points per game, while allowing 27.3 ppg.
Seth Henigan is in the midst of a nice second-year leap. The sophomore QB looks a lot more comfortable this season, and he’s protecting the football better. Henigan burned his hometown team with the win over North Texas, and he torched Navy for a career-best 415 passing yards in the AAC opener.
Henigan has thrown for 1,517 passing yards with ten touchdowns to one interception, and he scored a pair of rushing touchdowns through the first six games of the season..
Brandon Thomas, Jeyvon Ducker, and Asa Martin all received some work in the first five games. Thomas led the Tigers in rushing last season, and he’s scored a team-lead seven touchdowns this season. Ducker has provides some electricity, and he’s gained 255 yards on 45 touches. Martin, a fifth-year senior, gained 83 yards on 9 touches last week versus Houston.
Henigan has spread the ball out well early on, but his rapport with Caden Prieskorn has stood out the most. The junior tight end has served as a security blanket for the QB, and they’ve connected for touchdowns in each of the past five games. Prieskorn has a caught a team-lead 22 receptions for 219 yards and six touchdowns. Gabe Rogers leads the receiver core with 302 receiving yards.
East Carolina Panthers
East Carolina was four points away from an undefeated record prior to last weekend. The Pirates played in-state foe N.C. State extremely well at Dowdy-Ficklen in the opener, losing on a missed last second field goal attempt. ECU ripped off a pair of wins over nearby schools Old Dominion and Campbell, but a questionable home loss to Navy in their home opener dampened things a bit further. The Pirates ironically dominated in Tampa Bay, defeating USF by 20, but they found themselves in trouble again last weekend.
In Week 6, East Carolina lost to Tulane in New Orleans, 24-9, dropping to 4-2 against the spread this season.
ECU scores 30.8 points per game, while allowing 21.2 ppg.
Holton Ahlers can be counted on to bounce back here. The veteran quarterback threw 465 yards and tossed a career-high six touchdowns versus USF, and after a pair of timely interceptions altered last weekend’s game, you can bet he’s going to ball out Saturday night.
Ahlers is among the nation’s leaders 1,827 passing yards with 16 touchdowns to 5 interceptions through six starts.
Keaton Mitchell’s return to the lineup was nice, but it’ll be ever nicer this weekend. Mitchell gashed ODU and Campbell for career-highs in back-to-back weeks, before going down in the Navy loss. Mitchell leads ECU in rushing with 426 rushing yards through five games.
The ball distribution has been strong for ECU. Isaiah Winstead has been very dynamic after switching purples (Toledo to ECU), and leads the team in receptions (43) and receiving yards (560), while junior receivier C.J. Johnson is second on the team with 25 catches for 471 yards and a team-lead seven touchdown catches.

Both teams come in this one after sour losses, with the Tigers having their four-game win streak snapped along the way. Memphis beat up on some inferior schools, but this will mark their toughest test in over a month. Henigan was not pretty in the loss in Starkville, and Greenville might provide an even more hostile environment Saturday night.
The Pirates need a win here with arguably their four toughest games left. Look for Dowdy-Ficklen to be mystical this weekend, and over the visiting Tigers. Believe in the arm of veteran QB Holton Ahlers back at home here, and trust ECU to lay the points. ECU by 6
