Thundering Herd vs. Bears Gameday
Marshall heads to Springfield Saturday for a Week 3 matchup against Missouri State at Robert W. Plaster Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 PM ET, 5:30 PM local time, on CBS Sports Network. Both teams enter at 1-1 after finding the win column last weekend.
Marshall needed considerably more drama to get there. The Thundering Herd rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Middle Tennessee 28-26 after opening the season with a 45-0 loss at Penn State.
Marshall’s first road trip produced zero points, so Springfield doesn’t need to clear an especially high bar.
Missouri State’s season has been similarly extreme. The Bears were hammered 50-0 at Texas A&M, then returned home and beat Lindenwood 48-14 for their first victory of 2026. Apparently both teams required one September beating before remembering where the end zone was.
This is also a rematch of last season’s 21-20 Missouri State victory in Huntington. That win was the Bears’ first over an FBS opponent as they transitioned into the subdivision.
Marshall gets the return trip this time.

Marshall Thundering Herd vs. Missouri State Bears Odds & Last 5
Marshall enters as a 4.5-point road favorite, with the Thundering Herd around -189 on the moneyline and Missouri State returning approximately +156. The total sits at 52.5, giving bettors an interesting number after both offenses came alive last weekend.
Marshall’s first two games couldn’t have looked much different. The Herd produced nothing offensively in the 45-0 loss at Penn State, then scored 28 and generated 310 yards against Middle Tennessee.
Even that win required some late work.
Marshall trailed 20-14 entering the fourth quarter before scoring twice, including the eventual winning touchdown following Zah Jackson’s 54-yard interception return. Middle Tennessee answered with a late touchdown but failed on the two-point conversion.
Missouri State has taken an even more violent statistical swing. The Bears went from getting shut out by 50 at Texas A&M to scoring 48 against Lindenwood, which is one way to make early-season averages completely useless.
There is also some history here despite this being only the second meeting. Missouri State won 21-20 at Marshall last season, so the Herd isn’t exactly walking into Springfield wondering whether the Bears can hang around.
Bears Stats
Missouri State has scored 48 points through two games, with every one of them coming against Lindenwood. The Bears responded to their scoreless opener by producing their first win of the season and getting several offensive pieces involved.
Skyler Locklear has thrown for 288 yards and one touchdown without an interception. Protecting the football has been the encouraging part, especially after Missouri State spent much of the Texas A&M game simply trying to survive.
The ground game gives Locklear some help.
Breezy Dubar leads the Bears with 97 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Ramone Green Jr. has added 83 yards and two scores. Missouri State doesn’t have to make this entirely a quarterback exercise, which should help against a Marshall defense that has already spent plenty of time chasing people.
Missouri State went from zero points to 48 in one week, which qualifies as a fairly aggressive offensive adjustment.
Isaiah Myers has been the most productive receiver with 155 yards and a touchdown. Mekhi Miller and Jmariyae Robinson have also contributed, giving Locklear more than one place to go with the football.
The Bears now get their second straight home game.
That matters after the offense looked much more comfortable against Lindenwood. Missouri State also has last year’s 21-20 win over Marshall to remove any mystery about whether it can compete in this matchup.
Thundering Herd Stats
Marshall finally got its offense moving against Middle Tennessee after being shut out at Penn State. The Herd finished with 310 yards, 181 through the air and 129 on the ground, while scoring all four touchdowns without attempting a field goal.
The interesting part was how Marshall got there.
Carlos Del Rio-Wilson started and completed seven of eight passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 43 yards and another score, but Marshall used Zion Turner and Khalil Wilkins as well.
Turner became particularly important in the fourth quarter.
He helped direct two touchdown drives as Marshall erased a 20-14 deficit. Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw supplied the biggest offensive play with a 69-yard touchdown reception and later recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score.
The defense eventually supplied the decisive swing.
Zah Jackson intercepted Roman Gagliano and returned it 54 yards to the Middle Tennessee two-yard line. T.J. Lester scored on the next play, giving Marshall the touchdown it eventually needed when the Blue Raiders made one final push.
There is still plenty to clean up. Middle Tennessee gained 352 yards, ran eight more plays and held the football for more than 32 minutes, so Marshall’s 28 points didn’t arrive through complete domination.

Thundering Herd vs. Bears QB Matchup
Skyler Locklear has handled the majority of Missouri State’s quarterback work through two games. He’s thrown for 288 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, giving the Bears a relatively steady presence after two wildly different team performances.
Marshall’s quarterback picture has been less conventional. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson started against Middle Tennessee and was extremely efficient, completing seven of eight passes for 92 yards and a touchdown while adding another score with his legs.
Marshall used three quarterbacks last week, because apparently choosing only one would have made things unnecessarily simple.
Zion Turner also mattered when the game tightened. He completed five of nine passes for 66 yards and helped lead two fourth-quarter touchdown drives as Marshall came from behind.
That makes this matchup more interesting than the raw passing totals suggest.
Locklear offers Missouri State continuity, while Marshall has shown a willingness to change quarterbacks and let different skill sets influence the offense. Del Rio-Wilson remains the primary option, but Turner has already shown he can be trusted when the Herd needs points late.
Neither offense needs a huge passing day to move the scoreboard.
Missouri State has multiple productive backs, while Marshall generated three rushing touchdowns against Middle Tennessee. If both teams can stay out of the kind of hole they dug against their Power Four opponents, the quarterbacks should have considerably friendlier afternoons.
Thundering Herd vs. Bears bottom line: both teams followed a spectacular opening-week faceplant with an offensive revival, and 52.5 asks whether either defense is trustworthy enough to spoil the encore.

Here is my Thundering Herd Bears free pick: Over 52.5 is my play Saturday in Springfield. These teams have already combined for a 45-0 loss, a 50-0 loss, a 48-point win and a 54-point game. Apparently September has no interest in moderation.
Missouri State’s offense looked considerably healthier against Lindenwood, scoring 48 after getting blanked by Texas A&M. Skyler Locklear has protected the football, while Breezy Dubar and Ramone Green Jr. give the Bears multiple options on the ground.
Marshall finally found some offense last week too.
Both offenses woke up in Week 2, while neither defense has earned enough trust to scare me off 52.5.
The Herd scored 28 against Middle Tennessee despite using three quarterbacks and generating only 310 yards. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson supplied a 69-yard touchdown pass, and Zion Turner helped engineer two fourth-quarter scoring drives.
Missouri State should create chances at home.
The Bears put 48 on Lindenwood and beat this Marshall team 21-20 last season. The Herd has already allowed 71 points through two games, although Penn State obviously did most of the heavy lifting.
I don’t need another 48 from Missouri State.
Something around 30-27 gets us there, and both teams have enough defensive questions to make that reasonable. Marshall’s quarterback rotation also adds some unpredictability, which isn’t necessarily bad when I’m holding an Over ticket.
Over 52.5 is my play.
