When these teams met a year ago, the Cardinals won handily by a score of 41-3 so revenge is definitely going to be on the mind for Syracuse here.
Louisville will look for similar results when they hit the road for this divisional clash.

Louisville ended up going 6-7 a year ago which was pretty disappointing for them given the kind of expectations that were given to them, so being able to start off on the right foot in a game like is going to be key for them.
Malik Cunningham is back as the quarterback and there is no question this kid is a highly talented duel threat player. He did struggle with consistency a year ago so it will be interesting to see how he performs this season.
For as good as their gunslinger is, there is more to it than just how he plays. The Cardinals feature a very talented offense to support him, but there are still a lot of questions on the defensive side of the ball.
A common theme for this defensive unit a year ago was not being able to get key stops on a consistent enough basis and simply allowing too many explosive plays which often led to lots of points being scored.
Not that the Orange are some great threat on offense, but it will still be interesting to see how they handle that offense especially when trying to slow down Sean Tucker. If they are able to do so and make Syracuse one-dimensional, it could be a good day for them on that side of the field.
Syracuse Orange
Aside from maybe their locker room, the expectations are really not all that high for Syracuse in 2022 and it is hard to argue with it.
This is a team that did not do anything all that special in 2022 and I would not say there are a ton of reasons to believe things will be a whole lot different this year.
With the exception of Tucker, there are not many players on this roster that really stand out to me so it really would not shock me if it is more of the same from this Syracuse football team.
Sure, it is possible that Garrett Shrader could play well this season and really lead this squad to a high level of play, but I am not banking on that one. He is a serviceable QB at best and I am not envisioning any sort of great play from him this year.
Look, there are plenty of questions surrounding this football team, but one of the main ones for me is their defense. Similar to their opponent, it was a unit that had its fair share of struggles last season and they now have the tall task of shutting down a very capable and talented offensive team like Louisville.

A lot of people within the Syracuse organization and fanbase are hoping to see their team play differently compared to a season ago, but I just do not that in the opener.
To me, it is very clear Louisville is the more explosive team, especially on the offensive side of things and I expect that to be shown on Saturday.
When Cunningham and his compliment of weapons on offense really get it going, I just do not see the Orange being able to get a ton of stops.
It is not as if Shrader & co. are facing a great defense, so it is very possible they have some success on offense, but I do not think it will be enough to really keep this game all that close.
The final score might not be as lopsided as it was in ’21, but I still like the Cardinals to cover this line on the road.
