This should be an intriguing matchup on Saturday night as Liberty heads to Dallas, Texas to take on the SMU Mustangs.
Both teams at 1-1 on the season with both their losses coming against Power 5 opponents, they’ll be looking to make headway before the meat of their 2016 season begins.
While SMU may be seen in the eyes of many as the superior team in this one — especially at home — an injury to QB Matt Davis may give Liberty the confidence to pull an upset in Dallas.
Look for this to be a fun affair where both teams trade quite a few blows.
Liberty’s loss on the season came against Virginia Tech.
It was an expected loss but one that also showcased the Flames’ heart in a tough loss on the road.
Plus, they rebounded nicely against Jacksonville to the tune of a 55-7 walloping that showcased the Flames’ impressive rushing attack, as they rushed for 319 yards, 128 of which came from Todd Macon.
Defensively Liberty was also impressive, recording two INTs and limiting RB Ulysses Bryant to 75 yards on the ground. They’re definitely not a cupcake and will give SMU quite the fight.
After taking down a paltry North Texas team in week one, the Mustangs made the quick trip South to take on in-state Rival Baylor, ultimately falling to the Bears to the tune of a 13-40 trouncing.
And while that game was slightly lopsided, worse news came out recently for SMU as QB Matt Davis has a torn ACL and will be out the rest of the season.
Replacing him is the relatively unknown freshman Ben Hicks, who has the lofty task of guiding an offense that put up 63 points in week one and just 13 in week two.
To be fair, Hicks wasn’t terrible against Baylor but looked a little shaky at times in the pocket and uncertain of a few throws.
That experience against the Bears, however, should allow him to vastly improve between starts as he gains more confidence the Mustangs are his team now.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- SMU is looking to equal its win total from 2015, where they won just two games.
- SMU began its season with two road games. Saturday’s matchup will be their home opener.
- Liberty has a knack for playing FBS opponents relatively close, including a narrow 20-17 loss to Wake Forest in 2012.
Free Week 3 NCAA Football Prediction
I’ll admit it, it’s tough to call this one. Both Liberty and SMU are 1-1 on the season and matchup well against each other.
SMU QB Ben Hicks showed that he can sling the ball last Saturday, as he attempted 44 passes, proving the confidence his coaches have in him to succeed.
Though he completed just 17 passes, Hicks still amassed 229 yard in the air and should have a decent time picking apart a Liberty defense that gave up 36 to Virginia Tech.
This one will be a fun, close game that goes down to the wire.
Look for SMU and Ben Hicks to pull it out in the end.

Ben Hicks will show the nation why he was a prized recruit in this one, leading SMU to a week three win over the Flames.
