Kent State gets a massive step up in class after finally finding some offensive rhythm.
Ohio State is trying to recover from a much different kind of pain. The Buckeyes led Texas 23-3 entering the fourth quarter last Saturday before allowing 21 unanswered points in a 24-23 loss, dropping Ohio State to No. 6 in the AP poll. That’s one way to turn a comfortable Saturday night into a very long flight home.
Ryan Day’s team now returns to Ohio Stadium, where it opened the season with a 56-3 win over Ball State. Ohio State has also won all three previous meetings with Kent State, including a 66-0 victory in 2014.

The sportsbooks aren’t leaving much mystery about the talent gap here. Ohio State is laying 52.5 points at home, with Kent State getting +52.5 and the total sitting at 59.5.
Kent State has split its first two games both straight up and against the spread. The Golden Flashes failed to cover as a 35.5-point underdog in the 57-0 loss at South Carolina, then covered as a 10.5-point favorite in their 36-15 win over Wofford. Ohio State is also 1-1 straight up, but the Buckeyes have covered both of their first two numbers.
They handled Ball State 56-3 in Columbus before losing 24-23 as a road underdog at Texas.
A 52.5-point spread changes the conversation considerably. Ohio State doesn’t merely have to control this game; the Buckeyes have to keep piling it on long after winning is probably no longer the issue.

Ohio State has scored 79 points through two games while allowing only 27. The Buckeyes followed their 56-point opener with 23 at Texas, although the offense stalled when the Longhorns erased a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit. Julian Sayin has thrown for 598 yards through two starts, establishing himself as Ohio State’s QB1.
Jeremiah Smith remains the centerpiece of the passing game with 315 receiving yards, including 164 against Texas, while Bo Jackson leads the Buckeyes with 157 rushing yards.
Ohio State has plenty of firepower, but last week’s fourth quarter gave Ryan Day plenty to fix.
The Buckeyes were held scoreless in the final quarter at Texas after controlling most of the game. Sayin threw for 278 yards, while Smith caught eight passes for 164 yards and a touchdown, but Ohio State couldn’t finish drives when the pressure increased.
Defensively, Ohio State held Texas to 24 points and limited Arch Manning to 195 passing yards. The bigger concern was closing the game, as the Longhorns scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns after entering the period down 23-3. Wide receiver Kyle Parker is currently listed as questionable with an undisclosed injury.
That’s a much shorter injury list than the original template suggested, and Ohio State still has considerable depth available for a game carrying this kind of spread.

Kent State’s season has already produced two completely different Saturdays. The Golden Flashes were shut out and held to 126 total yards at South Carolina, then generated 448 yards while beating Wofford 36-15 in their home opener.
The most encouraging development came in the fourth quarter against the Terriers.
Kent State scored 22 unanswered points in the final period, with Dru DeShields accounting for two rushing touchdowns and a passing score during the game. He finished with 248 passing yards and 74 rushing yards, giving the Flashes the dual-threat production they badly lacked in Week 1.
Da’Realyst Clark added five receptions for 90 yards against Wofford, while Wayne Harris caught three passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. Mason King contributed 68 rushing yards on only nine carries.
Through two games, Kent State has 332 passing yards and 297 rushing yards. The defense has produced six sacks and two interceptions, but the 57 points surrendered at South Carolina remain the obvious warning sign before facing an Ohio State roster loaded with speed.

There’s no quarterback mystery for Ohio State. Julian Sayin has started both games and has thrown for 598 yards through two weeks, including 278 in the loss at Texas. Sayin had Ohio State in command for three quarters in Austin before the offense went cold late.
He still has one of the country’s most dangerous receivers in Jeremiah Smith, and this matchup should give the Buckeyes opportunities to get the passing game back on schedule.
Sayin owns the talent advantage, while DeShields gives Kent State a legitimate running threat at quarterback.
Dru DeShields is firmly in charge of Kent State’s offense. He has thrown for 311 yards through two games and was responsible for three offensive touchdowns against Wofford, including scoring runs of 12 and 20 yards.
His mobility matters against an Ohio State defense that Kent State won’t consistently beat from a clean pocket. DeShields rushed for 74 yards against Wofford and showed he can create something after the original play breaks down. Nolan Good and Ethan Thanthanavong have seen only limited work behind him.
Unless the score gets completely out of hand, this matchup is Sayin against DeShields, not the three-quarterback rotation suggested by the original copy.

The Golden Flashes need to avoid the kind of collapse they suffered at South Carolina. Their 36-15 response against Wofford showed some life, with Dru DeShields making plays through the air and on the ground.
DeShields gives Kent State a quarterback who can extend drives and steal a few possessions with his legs. Against a number this ridiculous, every first down can feel like found money.
My CFB betting approach here is about the price, not pretending the talent is close. Ohio State can dominate and still leave the back door cracked once the starters begin disappearing.
At +52.5, I’m willing to make the Buckeyes beat Kent State by eight touchdowns before they beat my ticket.
