A pair of undefeated power five schools meet this weekend as Mississippi State hosts Kansas State. The Bulldogs dominated K-State 31-10 from Kansas last year.
And in 2018, Mississippi State fared well among the highly competitive SEC West, earning a bowl bid. Conversely, the Wildcats just missed bowl eligibility a season ago after posting a 5-7 record.
This year, each school has flashed offensive firepower against lesser opposition.
Kansas State
After outscoring their 2019 opponents 101-14, the Wildcats have redemption in mind this week vs. Mississippi State.
In limited blowout action last Saturday, junior quarterback Skylar Thompson completed 10-of-13 passes, adding two touchdowns against no interceptions. Frosh wideout Malik Knowles served as Thompson’s favorite target, catching five passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns.
While the passing game remained efficient vs. Bowling Green, the Wildcats’ ground attack was king. Senior tailback James Gilbert added 103 yards and two scores to a machine-like 333 yard K-State backfield rush which averaged 5.7 yards per carry.

Though the Wildcats placed 52 points and five rushing scores on the Falcons, an equally impressive Kansas State defense kept pace. While gaining 521 yards, the Wildcats stonewalled Bowling Green to just 79 total offensive yards.
Further, Kansas State owned a 42:52 to 17:08 time of possession against the outmanned Falcons.
BGSU failed on all 11 third down conversions as the Wildcats’ line held center stage.
Following such a convincing win, even with a head-to-head setback last season against Mississippi State, Kansas State appears primed for a week three dogfight in Starkville.
Mississippi State
While not quite as impressive as Saturday’s opponent, the Bulldogs carry an undefeated record into Starkville this weekend.

Mississippi State will need to find another gear vs. K-State not displayed during casual recent wins over Southern Mississippi and Louisiana. The Bulldogs did perform better last weekend as seven Mississippi State players returned from week one suspension.
However, after a hot start, transfer QB Tommy Stevens suffered a head injury vs. USM which leaves his status this week in question.
Freshman Garrett Shrader replaced Stevens and completed 7-of-11 passes in a primary game-management role.
Minus his top play-caller, Junior RB Kylin Hill added 123 yards and one touchdown to carry Mississippi State’s offensive load.
The Bulldogs offered bend-don’t-break defense vs. Southern Mississippi as the Golden Eagles tallied 344 offensive yards, but were held up in the red-zone.
Mississippi State claimed three turnovers and a plus-seven time of possession edge to gloss over their latest win.

Free Week 3 NCAA Football Pick
From Bulldogs quarterback uncertainty to recent lackluster defensive displays and off-field issues, this game has upset written all over it.
Expect K-State’s strong play to continue this weekend as the Wildcats’ offense lights up Mississippi State’s secondary. James Gilbert will also lead a potent ground attack to seal victory for the Wildcats.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Kansas State ATS +8.5
Kansas State has too much momentum coming in to ignore. Plus, if Tommy Stevens sits, the lean should be even heavier for a Wildcat team clicking on all cylinders.
I’ll fade Mississippi State’s 2018 success here and roll with K-State as the Bulldogs simply do not look ready to entertain decent opposition yet.
