Gamecocks vs. Owls Gameday
Jacksonville State travels to Kennesaw State for a Wednesday night Conference USA matchup at Walens Family Field at Fifth Third Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM ET on CBS Sports Network. Charles Kelly’s Gamecocks enter 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Jerry Mack’s Owls are 1-3 and opening their CUSA schedule.
Kennesaw won the championship rematch rights. Jacksonville State would probably like the trophy conversation to end there.
Jacksonville State comes in off a 23-13 win over Middle Tennessee.
The Gamecocks trailed 13-10 in the third quarter before scoring the final 13 points. They finished with 517 yards of offense and didn’t allow another point after falling behind.
The road has been a different story.
Jacksonville State is 3-0 at home but 0-2 away from AmFirst Stadium. Wednesday gives the Gamecocks another chance to fix that before the road record starts becoming a weekly conversation nobody wants.
Kennesaw State has had 10 days to prepare after its 17-14 loss at Arkansas State.
There’s history attached to this one too. The Owls beat Jacksonville State 19-15 in last year’s CUSA Championship Game, and the programs are separated by only 86 miles. Apparently conference realignment occasionally does something useful.

Jacksonville State Gamecocks vs. Kennesaw State Owls Odds & Last 5
It’s Week 6, Jacksonville State Gamecocks vs. Kennesaw State Owls, hopefully we get a great matchup.
Jacksonville State opened as a three-point road favorite.
The Gamecocks were priced -150 on the moneyline, with Kennesaw State at +125. The total opened at 50.5.
Jacksonville State has won three of four since dropping its opener.
The Gamecocks were efficient when it mattered against Middle Tennessee, scoring on four of five red-zone trips. They also controlled possession for more than 32 minutes and didn’t punt once, although two interceptions kept the game interesting longer than necessary.
Kennesaw State has dropped three straight since opening with a win.
The Owls nearly stopped the slide at Arkansas State. They had a chance to tie the game late, but a 32-yard FG attempt missed with 1:45 remaining.
Now they finally come home.
Kennesaw played its previous two games on the road and has had an extended break before its conference opener. That’s a useful setup, especially when the opponent is the same program the Owls beat for the conference title last December.

Owls Stats
Kennesaw State has leaned heavily on its running game.
The Owls average better than 159 rushing yards per game. Boogie Woods III is coming off his best outing of the season with 101 yards and two TD’s against Arkansas State.
Rickie Collins gives them another option on the ground.
The Kennesaw QB rushed for 52 yards against Arkansas State while completing 17 of 24 passes for 129 yards. The Owls have four different players with at least 100 rushing yards and a TD this season, so Jacksonville State can’t spend the night chasing one guy.
Kennesaw has allowed 22.5 points per game.
Kai Russell has been one of the more active pieces on that defense with 17 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. The Owls need that front involved against a Jacksonville State offense that can make missed tackles expensive in a hurry.
Gamecocks Stats
Jacksonville State has scored 137 points through five games.
The Gamecocks produced a season-high 517 yards against Middle Tennessee. They ran for 276 of them while averaging better than seven yards per carry.
Creel is the engine, but he isn’t the entire garage.
Lucas Farrington ran for 94 yards in the Middle Tennessee win, while Jalen Likely added another 32. Jacksonville State can spread the carries around instead of asking its QB to play superhero for four quarters.
Creel creates the headaches. Jacksonville State has enough other bodies to keep handing out aspirin.
The defense responded when the Gamecocks needed it most.
Jacksonville State held Middle Tennessee scoreless after the Blue Raiders took a 13-10 lead. The Gamecocks finished with three sacks and allowed only 319 total yards.
Gamecocks vs. Owls QB Matchup
Collins remains the centerpiece of Kennesaw State’s offense.
His legs add another element to the Owls’ running attack, and he’s been particularly accurate early in games. Collins has completed 85.7% of his first-quarter throws through four starts.
Turning that early efficiency into TD’s is the next step.
Creel comes in after his best all-around performance of the season. He completed 19 of 27 passes for 241 yards and a TD against Middle Tennessee, then ran for another 119 yards and a score.
That earned him CUSA Offensive Player of the Week honors.
More importantly for this matchup, Creel has already topped 1,100 passing yards and 300 rushing yards. He can beat pressure with his arm, escape it with his legs or turn a busted play into something Kennesaw suddenly has to explain on the sideline.
CP Is More Than Just Sports Picks!
“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Kennesaw can’t simply pin its ears back and chase him.
Collins gives the Owls some of that same improvisational ability, but Jacksonville State has gotten more explosive production from the position. If this turns into a game where both QB’s have to create outside the original play call, that’s where the Gamecocks carry the bigger threat.
Jacksonville State Gamecocks vs. Kennesaw State Owls bottom line: Kennesaw owns the rest and last year’s championship memory, but Jacksonville State brings the more dangerous QB and more offensive answers into Wednesday night’s rematch.
Jacksonville State Gamecocks vs. Kennesaw State Owls Football Betting Trends
- Jacksonville State has won all their last 15 games as favorites.
- They have covered the spread in their last 4 games as favorites.
- Plus, the Gamecocks have a 72% win rate in games with totals of 50 or more.
- Kennesaw State has covered the spread in their last 4 games as underdogs.
- Also, the Owls have an 88.9% win rate in their last 9 home games.
- Kennesaw State is 3-0 against the spread after a loss in their last 3 games.
Gamecocks Owls Free Pick: Gamecocks -3
Here is my Gamecocks Owls free pick: I’m laying Gamecocks -3. Jacksonville State has won 15 straight as a favorite, and I’m not jumping off that train when the price is only a FG.
Kennesaw will be rested, at home and plenty motivated for the championship rematch.
Good. I want their best shot.
The difference for me is Jacksonville State has more ways to survive when this game gets messy. Creel can extend drives when protection breaks down, the Gamecocks can lean on the run, and they just showed they can erase a second-half deficit without panicking.
Kennesaw gets the revenge angle. Jacksonville State gets my money. Seems fair.
The Gamecocks have also covered four straight as a favorite. That’s the kind of trend I care about when I’m only being asked to lay three instead of some inflated touchdown tax on the road.
Now give me the FG and get out of my way.
I think Jacksonville State wins this game, and if I’m right, asking them to clear -3 isn’t exactly requesting a miracle. Win by four and I’ll happily spend Thursday pretending it was never in doubt.
Make it 27-23 and everybody goes home happy. Well, everybody holding my ticket does.
Give me Gamecocks -3.
