The Iowa State Cyclones are heading down south to take on the Texas Longhorns in Austin this Saturday.
The 1-5 Cyclones have struggled this season, to say the least.
They are coming off two close losses to tough Big 12 opponents Oklahoma State (38-31 last week) and Baylor (45-42 two weeks ago) and hope they can right the ship this week.
The Longhorns have been up and down so far this year, and it is tough to get a grasp on them.
They played Oklahoma tougher than many people expected in the Red River Rivalry last week, but lost 45-40. Both of these teams have yet to win a conference game this year, so at least that is one thing that is certain to change.
Iowa State Cyclones
The Cyclones did not have much in terms of expectations this year, but they still managed to disappoint in their first three games.
They lost their season opener at home to UNI 25-20 then were blown out in successive weeks by Iowa and TCU.
They notched their first and only win of the year the following week versus San Jose State but come into this one on another two game skid.
The last two weeks, the Cyclones have held double-digit leads against Baylor and Oklahoma State but were outscored by a combined 17-0 in the fourth quarter to lose both.
This shows that they can compete with Big 12 opposition, so if they are able to get up on the Longhorns, they will need to buckle down and hang on late.
Despite what program officials are saying, Charlie Strong is on the hot seat this year.
The ‘Horns have been underwhelming, at best, during his three-year term and have not been relevant in the Big 12 for years.
A win against the Cyclones won’t be enough to keep his job, but a loss will certainly mean his time there is over.
Texas started out strong this year, winning their first two games including the season opener against then 10th ranked Notre Dame. The AP folks were quick to jump on the possible return of the Longhorns to the national scene.
They catapulted Texas into the top 15 but did not realize at the time how overrated Notre Dame had been.
Now the Longhorns have lost three straight and allowed at least 45 points in all of them.

Free Week 7 NCAA Football Prediction
It may seem as though the Cyclones don’t stand a chance in this one, but they have played well in their last two against tough conference opponents.
If they are able to do the same and get up early on Texas, the Longhorns may not have the same firepower as Baylor and OK State to catch up.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Texas -13.5
Unfortunately for the Cyclones, they probably will not get up on Texas the way they did against those teams.
Charlie Strong has been heavily criticized in the last two weeks for the horrible Texas defense, although he was supposed to be a defensive mastermind.
I expect the D to step up for him in this one and at least keep Iowa State under 30.
