The Iowa State Cyclones will travel to Lawrence and take on the Kansas Jayhawks this Saturday from Memorial Stadium on ESPN2. Iowa State will open as the three-point road favorites, with the total opening at 58.5.
HISTORY: Kansas and Iowa State quietly have one of the longest running rivalries in the country, meeting in every season since 1929. Kansas leads the all-time series 50-45-6, but Iowa State has won the last seven matchups.

Iowa State got off to 3-0 start in non-conference play. The Cyclones cruised in their home opener against SE Missouri State, and they picked up a hard-fought, underdog victory over Iowa to take back the Cy-Hawk Trophy. ISU then covered the 19-point spread in a win over Ohio at home, but they stumbled entering Big 12 play last weekend.

Hunter Dekkers has done well in the starting role early on. The sophomore quarterback threw for four touchdowns in his debut, and led the Cyclones to their first win over Iowa in seven years. He was a bit rattled in his Big 12 debut, throwing a pair of costly picks to the Bears. He should be able to bounce back against a lax Kansas defense this weekend.
Dekkers is up to 1,029 passing yards with ten touchdowns to five interceptions during the month of September.
The Cyclones had big shoes to fill in replacing Breece Hall this year, but Jirehl Brock has performed well in the lead role thus far. The junior back rushed for 100 yards in the first two games, and he scored twice last weekend against Baylor, rushing and catching a touchdown pass. Brock has rushed for 353 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and caught 13 passes through the first four games this season.
Xavier Hutchinson has been the go-to guy for the Cyclones early on again. After just missing the 1,000-yard mark in 2021, Hutchinson is on pace to achieve that feat after an impressive start. The senior wideout has caught eight passes or more each of the first four games, including a game-changing 11-catch performance against Iowa. He leads ISU with 36 receptions, 403 receiving yards, and five touchdowns.
Kansas Jayhawks
Can the Jayhawks make it five straight?
Kansas breezed through Tennessee Tech in their home opener, and they’ve unexpectedly kept the party going. The Jayhawks traveled and picked up big underdog victories over West Virginia and Houston, rewarding loyal bettors by cashing their win total of o2.5. The Jayhawks hosted another familiar on-court foe last weekend, and gave the crowd in Lawrence a show.
In Week 4, Kansas defeated Duke, improving to 4-0 against the spread this season.
Jalon Daniels has put it all together this Fall. The dual-threat quarterback has brought an element of excitement to the offense, and his performance against WVU should have the Big 12 on notice. Daniels’ has followed that game up with a pair of five-touchdown outings, and has the look of a Heisman threat early.
Daniels has thrown for 890 passing yards with eleven touchdowns to one interception this season. He’s also leads KU with 320 rushing yards and four scores.
Devin Neal and Daniel Hishaw Jr. have done a good job splitting the touches alongside Daniels. Neal led the team in rushing last season, and he’s scored four touchdowns through the first four contests. Hishaw Jr. rushed for 119 yards and two scores in the win over WVU, and he caught a 73-yard touchdown pass versus Duke. Neal has 258 rushing yards, while Hinshaw Jr. has an identical 231 yards.
Lawrence Arnold and Luke Grimm have been the primary pass catchers early, catching 15 passes apiece and both scoring touchdowns last weekend.

The Cyclones aren’t slouches by any means, and after defeating Iowa in such a smashmouth game, they showed to ability to fight and contain. As solid as that was, what KU has brewing feels a lot bigger. Football fans saw a surge like this from Kansas years ago with Mark Mangino and Todd Reesing, and it looks like we have something similar with Lance Leipold and Jalon Daniels.
