Cyclones vs. Hawkeyes Gameday
Iowa State and No. 21 Iowa bring 1-0 records into the latest Cy-Hawk rivalry game at Kinnick Stadium. The Cyclones opened with a 38-10 victory over Southeast Missouri, while Iowa overwhelmed Northern Illinois 40-0. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET Saturday on NBC.
This is Iowa State’s first road game under head coach Jimmy Rogers.
Iowa State has won two straight Cy-Hawk meetings, with both victories decided by three points or fewer.
The Cyclones have recently turned this rivalry in their direction, winning 20-19 at Kinnick Stadium in 2024 and 16-13 in Ames last season. Iowa now gets another shot at home after producing one of the most dominant performances of Week 1.
The Hawkeyes piled up 507 total yards against Northern Illinois and allowed only 120. Iowa also scored 33 points before halftime, giving Kirk Ferentz’s team a much different offensive look than the one Iowa State has seen in several recent meetings.

Iowa State Cyclones vs. Iowa Hawkeyes Odds & Last 5
Iowa is a 14.5-point home favorite after opening around -11.5. The Hawkeyes are roughly -650 to -690 on the moneyline, with Iowa State available around +475 to +550. The total opened at 41.5 and has been available between 40.5 and 41.5.
That’s an unusually large number for this rivalry.
Iowa State failed to cover more than 30 points against Southeast Missouri despite winning by 28. Iowa had no such problem against Northern Illinois, covering comfortably while producing 507 yards and pitching a shutout.
The recent series has belonged to the Cyclones.
Iowa State won 16-13 last season after taking a 20-19 victory at Kinnick Stadium in 2024. Seven straight Cy-Hawk meetings have been decided by 10 points or fewer, making this year’s double-digit spread a major departure from the recent history.
Hawkeyes Stats
Iowa’s offense produced 507 total yards against Northern Illinois, its highest output in a season opener since 2002. The Hawkeyes rushed for 289 yards and scored touchdowns on each of their first four possessions. They led 33-0 by halftime.
Kamari Moulton supplied the biggest plays on the ground.
Moulton rushed for a career-high 183 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries. His scoring runs covered 50 and 37 yards, while Tony Diaz caught seven passes for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Iowa used both Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski at quarterback.
Brown completed 12 of 20 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown, while Hecklinski went 7-of-16 for 76 yards and another score. Kirk Ferentz has not declared the quarterback competition finished heading into the rivalry game.
The defense was even more dominant. Iowa held Northern Illinois to 120 total yards, recorded six sacks and forced two turnovers. NIU didn’t pick up its first first down until the third quarter.

Cyclones Stats
Iowa State opened the Jimmy Rogers era with a 38-10 win over Southeast Missouri. The Cyclones finished with 303 total yards and built a 28-7 halftime lead. Their defense created most of the separation by consistently disrupting SEMO’s offense.
Jaylen Raynor accounted for four of Iowa State’s five touchdowns.
The Arkansas State transfer completed 8 of 16 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 32 yards and scored twice, giving the Cyclones a dual-threat element they can use against Iowa’s aggressive front.
Aiden Flora led Iowa State’s rushing attack with 45 yards and a touchdown.
Dominic Overby supplied the biggest receiving plays, catching two passes for 85 yards. Vince Benetti and Easton Miller caught Raynor’s touchdown passes as Iowa State generated enough explosive plays to build an early cushion.
The Cyclones recorded six sacks and forced three turnovers. Isaac Terrell delivered three of those sacks, while the defense held Southeast Missouri to 209 total yards. Iowa State will need that same disruption against a much more physical Iowa offense.

Cyclones vs. Hawkeyes QB Matchup
Iowa enters the Cy-Hawk game without the same certainty at quarterback that Iowa State has. Hank Brown started against Northern Illinois and directed three touchdown drives on his first three possessions. Jeremy Hecklinski also played extensively and led another touchdown drive.
Brown was the more efficient passer in the opener.
He completed 60 percent of his attempts and threw a touchdown without an interception. Hecklinski completed seven of 16 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown but also threw Iowa’s only interception.
Iowa State knows Jaylen Raynor is its guy.
Raynor didn’t need a high-volume passing day against Southeast Missouri, but he produced four touchdowns with his arm and legs. His mobility becomes especially important against an Iowa defense that recorded six sacks in Week 1.
The quarterback contrast is interesting. Iowa can continue using Brown and Hecklinski if both are productive, while Iowa State will lean heavily on Raynor to create plays against a defense that gave Northern Illinois almost nothing.
Iowa State Cyclones vs. Iowa Hawkeyes bottom line: Iowa enters with a dominant defense and powerful rushing attack, while Iowa State brings a mobile quarterback and a two-game winning streak in the rivalry.

Cyclones Hawkeyes Free Pick: Iowa -14.5
Here is my Cyclones Hawkeyes free pick: I’m laying Iowa -14.5. Rivalry games make big spreads uncomfortable, but Iowa showed enough on both lines in its opener for me to back the favorite.
The Hawkeyes rushed for 289 yards against Northern Illinois while allowing only 120 total yards. Kamari Moulton ripped off 183 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, giving Iowa a home-run threat Iowa State has to contain.
Iowa’s defense can make this ugly quickly.
The Hawkeyes recorded six sacks and didn’t allow Northern Illinois a first down until the third quarter.
Iowa State also created disruption in its opener, recording six sacks and forcing three turnovers. The difference is the Cyclones produced only 303 total yards against Southeast Missouri, and now they’re stepping into a tougher road environment.
Jaylen Raynor gives Iowa State some mobility at quarterback. He accounted for four touchdowns last week, but completed only eight of 16 passes for 184 yards. Iowa can make him earn each drive.
There is also a huge change from the recent Cy-Hawk games. Iowa has dropped two straight in this rivalry, but this roster enters as a two-touchdown favorite because the talent gap has widened.
I’ll trust Iowa’s defense and rushing attack to create separation. I’m laying Iowa -14.5.
