Cyclones vs. Cougars Gameday
The Iowa State Cyclones travel to Provo to face the No. 8 BYU Cougars on Friday, October 9, 2026. Kickoff at LaVell Edwards Stadium is scheduled for 10:15 PM ET on ESPN.
Iowa State enters at 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 play. The Cyclones are 3-1 at home but lost their only road game, leaving first-year coach Jimmy Rogers looking for a better result away from Ames. A Friday night trip to Provo isn’t exactly the easy option.
BYU is 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference action under Kalani Sitake.
BYU wants to protect its unbeaten record, while Iowa State needs a road performance worth remembering.
The Cougars are hosting homecoming, giving the crowd another reason to make things uncomfortable for the visitors. BYU has plenty of momentum, although undefeated teams tend to discover that everyone enjoys taking a shot at them.
Iowa State leads the all-time series 5-1. BYU won last year’s meeting 41-27 in Ames, but the Cyclones took the previous matchup in Provo by a convincing 45-13 score.
It’s Week 6, Iowa State Cyclones vs. BYU Cougars, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Iowa State Cyclones vs. BYU Cougars Odds & Last 5
BYU opened as a -399 moneyline favorite, with Iowa State at +313. The Cougars are laying 10.5 points, a significant spread for a conference matchup.
Iowa State defeated West Virginia 45-42 last Saturday in a game that featured plenty of offense and very little defensive comfort. The Cyclones piled up 577 total yards. Their defense, unfortunately, spent much of the afternoon watching the scoreboard operator earn his paycheck.
BYU escaped TCU with a 17-10 victory in heavy rain. The Cougars managed only 216 total yards, but their defense delivered when it mattered.
Those performances couldn’t have looked much different. Iowa State survived a shootout, while BYU won a game in which every yard felt expensive.
The opening spread rewards BYU’s unbeaten start, but injuries add another consideration. Bettors comparing current numbers at their favorite sportsbooks should pay attention to any movement before kickoff.

Cougars Stats
BYU has scored 149 points through four games, averaging 37 per contest. The Cougars have rushed for 942 yards, establishing a physical ground game that has helped keep their offense balanced.
Running back LJ Martin has 344 rushing yards and three TD’s, but he’s been ruled out for Friday. Backup Sione Moa is also unavailable, leaving BYU to rely on its remaining backs. That’s a substantial test of the team’s depth.
Freshman receiver Legend Glasker has caught 14 passes for 279 yards and two TD’s.
Defensively, the Cougars have allowed just 57 points. They’re giving up fewer than 15 points per game, although linebacker Isaiah Glasker is another confirmed absence.
Defensive end Tausili Akana leads the team with six tackles for loss. BYU has generally been disciplined and difficult to sustain drives against. That consistency has helped the Cougars overcome some uneven offensive stretches.
Cyclones Stats
Iowa State has scored 168 points through five games, averaging nearly 34 per contest. The Cyclones have gained 971 passing yards and 987 rushing yards, showing they can move the football in different ways.
Running back Aiden Flora has been the biggest offensive weapon with 594 rushing yards and six TD’s. Against West Virginia, he rushed for 212 yards and three scores while throwing two additional TD passes. Apparently, carrying the football wasn’t enough work for one afternoon.
Flora has the speed and vision to turn a routine handoff into a substantial gain.
Iowa State has genuine big-play ability, but its defense must give the offense enough opportunities.
The Cyclones have allowed 106 points this season. They’ve recorded nine sacks, two interceptions and five fumble recoveries, showing some ability to disrupt possessions despite their scoring issues.
Linebacker Sullivan Schlimgen has been a dependable presence in the middle of the defense. His tackling and recognition will be important against BYU’s blocking schemes.
Cyclones vs. Cougars QB Matchup
BYU QB Bear Bachmeier has thrown for 704 yards with six TD’s and one interception. He’s completing 64% of his passes, providing steady production without needing to throw 40 times every week.
Bachmeier is also a threat on the ground. He scored twice rushing against TCU, including a fourth-quarter TD that gave BYU some breathing room. His mobility adds another dimension to the offense.
Backup Treyson Bourguet has attempted only three passes for 15 yards.
Iowa State QB Jaylen Raynor has thrown for 903 yards, six TD’s and four interceptions on 119 attempts. He brings considerable starting experience, but his accuracy has been inconsistent this season.
Raynor completed 19 of 27 passes for 264 yards against West Virginia. That performance showed what he can accomplish when the offense stays aggressive and gives him manageable reads. The challenge is producing that level of execution against a stronger defense.
CP Is More Than Just Sports Picks!
“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Connor Moberly is Iowa State’s backup and has attempted only two passes this season.
Bachmeier has been the more efficient passer, while Raynor brings the ability to extend plays and improvise. Both will need to recognize pressure quickly, especially on obvious passing downs.
Iowa State Cyclones vs. BYU Cougars bottom line: BYU’s efficient QB play and disciplined defense meet an Iowa State offense with enough explosive talent to challenge the Cougars in Provo.
Iowa State Cyclones vs. BYU Cougars Football Betting Trends
- Iowa State has gone 7-3 against the spread as an underdog in their last 10 games.
- In their last 21 games following a win, the Cyclones have a 16-5 straight-up record.
- Plus, the Cyclones have hit the over in all of their last 3 games this season.
- BYU has an impressive 24-1 straight-up record as favorites in their last 25 games.
- Additionally, the Cougars have covered the spread in their last 8 games as favorites.
- In their last 9 home games, BYU has won every game straight up.
Cyclones Cougars Free Pick: BYU -10.5
Here is my Cyclones Cougars free pick: BYU -10.5. Laying double digits in a conference game isn’t something I do for entertainment, and Iowa State has enough talent to make this uncomfortable. Still, I trust the Cougars to handle business in Provo.
BYU has won 24 of its last 25 games as a favorite, covered eight straight in that role and won nine consecutive home games. Those trends don’t cash a ticket by themselves, but they’re certainly better than crossing your fingers and hoping for the best.
My biggest concern is the missing BYU running backs. That’s legitimate, and I’m not pretending otherwise.
I’m backing the better-organized team to turn its home-field advantage into a comfortable fourth quarter.
Iowa State can produce explosive plays, but I don’t trust its defense to deliver enough stops once BYU establishes a rhythm. The Cougars don’t need to dominate every possession. They need to win the important ones and make the Cyclones chase the game.
I’ve been around long enough to know a pretty win pays exactly the same as an ugly one. I expect BYU to create some separation after halftime, and I’m comfortable laying the number. Give me BYU -10.5.
