It is a short season and neither of these teams is off to a good start.
One of these will be eliminated from competing for the conference title after this one. I don’t see how a team with three losses is in the race.
Minnesota has not looked very strong this season but being at home I would think provides some advantage.
Iowa Hawkeyes
The Hawkeyes are 1-2 but those losses were by a combined 4 points so they have been competitive while losing to Purdue and Northwestern.
Be that as it may, nobody could have predicted they would whip Michigan State 49-7 last week. They had only scored 40 points the previous two weeks combined.
As is often the case in a result like that, the offense was helped by three interceptions by the defense. They got a special teams score too.
The defense was super stingy against the run, allowing less than two yards per carry. When Iowa ran the ball they had lots of success, netting 5.5 yards per carry on the way to over 200 yards on the ground.
Iowa was improved last week for sure. I am not certain what they true level is yet though.
Minnesota Golden Gophers
While Iowa had two close losses Minnesota just has one – they last to Maryland by just a point the week before last. Last week’s win was a must.
The key to the victory was playing a little defense. After back to back weeks giving up 40+ the Gophers held Illinois to just 14 points.
Mohamed Ibrahim had a monster day last week rushing for more than 220 yards with 4 TDs. He has surprisingly been their best offensive player this season.
It is the defense that is going to be the difference-maker this season. On days where that unit gets the job done Minnesota has more than enough offense to hang with most teams in the conference.
