Week 2 will see the Indiana State Sycamores head to Rocky Top to take on the Tennessee Volunteers. Both teams were in tough battles last week, with each contest coming down to the final seconds (and beyond).
The Sycamores fell to East Illinois on a late touchdown pass with only three seconds left on the clock in Week 1.
The Volunteers came away victorious in double overtime against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in one of the most thrilling games of opening week.
Indiana State Sycamores
The Sycamores have high hopes coming into the 2017 season. First year head coach Curt Mallory is bringing in a new regime, a new system and a little bit of excitement into a program that is not exactly a historical powerhouse in football.
It looked as though Mallory’s debut would be an upset win over Eastern Illinois last week, until Panthers’ quarterback Mitch Kimble fired a 15-yard touchdown with only three seconds left on the clock.
Indiana State was leading the game 20-16 with under five minutes remaining and missed a potentially game-clinching field goal with 2:14 left.
They would eventually fall 22-20, but running back LeMonte Booker was a bright spot, with 154 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries.
It appears as though the Volunteers are looking to continue their pattern from last year of giving fans heart problems. The Vols, who only showed up for the second half of games last year, decided to wait until the 4th quarter of their Week 1 matchup to start playing.
Tennessee had no answer for Georgia Tech quarterback TaQuan Marshall until the very last minute– stacking him up on the goal line on a double overtime 2-point attempt that determined the game. Marshall rushed for a whopping 249 yards and five scores on 44 carries.
The Vols had rallied from a two-touchdown deficit in the 4th quarter (and blocked a last-second field goal) to push it to that point, and their offense finally started clicking at do-or-die time.
Running back John Kelly was even better than expected in his debut as the lead back– scoring four touchdowns and racking up 128 yards on 19 carries. One would hope he will get even more carries in the coming weeks.
Quinten Dormady was solid in his first start as the Vols’ QB; Dormady completed 20 of 37 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns against the Yellow Jackets.

The Sycamores do have the advantage of a strong running game– which is clearly still the weakness of the Volunteers. Tennessee should be looking to fix these and other issues in this game, before they travel to The Swamp next week.
