The Purdue defense faced plenty of challenges as well after surrendering 382 points to rank 144th. However, the Boilermakers excelled at generating sacks and interceptions, ranking 18th and 5th, respectively. Those numbers show a defense that has been capable of creating big plays.

Sycamores vs. Boilermakers QB Matchup
Ryan Browne returns to lead the Purdue Boilermakers at quarterback for the 2026 season.
Browne started all 12 games last season and threw for 2,153 yards. He also produced nine passing touchdowns, giving Purdue an experienced starter back to run the offense in Week 1.
Purdue’s quarterback room also includes Evans Chuba, Bennett Meredith, Garyt Odom and Corin Berry.
However, Browne brings the most returning experience after starting every game for the Boilermakers last season. His experience gives Purdue some stability at the position entering the opener against Indiana State.
Brock Riddle returns to the Indiana State quarterback room for the 2026 season.
Riddle appeared in limited action last season and managed 25 passing yards. With no touchdowns or interceptions in that sample, he enters the new season with considerably less game experience than Browne.
Indiana State also has Baruk Jonsson and Brady Wilson among its quarterback options.
That leaves Purdue with the clear experience advantage at quarterback entering Week 1. Browne has an entire season of starting experience behind him, while Indiana State enters the matchup with far less proven production from its current quarterback room.
Indiana State Sycamores vs. Purdue Boilermakers bottom line: Both programs enter Week 1 looking for a reset after difficult seasons, but Purdue gets home-field advantage and brings a history of dominant results against Indiana State into the opener.

Sycamores Boilermakers Free Pick: Under 57.5
Here is my Sycamores Boilermakers free pick: The writer’s biggest argument needs a correction because Indiana State already scored 21 points in its 2026 opener. Even so, I still see a path to the under 57.5.
Indiana State opened with a 23-21 loss to Southeast Missouri, so the claim that the Sycamores haven’t scored recently is clearly outdated. That doesn’t automatically make this a shootout.
Purdue is favored by more than 5 touchdowns, which creates an interesting total setup. If the Boilermakers control this game, Indiana State may have limited chances to contribute. Pretty simple.
The under can cash without Purdue’s defense being dominant if Indiana State struggles to produce touchdowns against the jump in competition.
However, the big spread combined with a 57.5 total suggests Purdue is expected to do most of the scoring. That’s important when considering this under.
Does Indiana State contribute enough to push this game past 57?
I’m skeptical. Additionally, Purdue doesn’t need to chase points forever if it builds the kind of lead the spread suggests, and that can slow things down later. Indiana State scoring 21 last week doesn’t scare me away, but it keeps this from being automatic.
My college football handicap lands on the Under 57.5, with Purdue controlling the game without needing a massive combined score.
