Hoosiers vs. Scarlet Knights Gameday
The No. 6 Indiana Hoosiers hit the road for the first time this season Saturday night to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at SHI Stadium. Indiana enters 4-0 and 1-0 in the Big Ten, while Rutgers is 1-3 and 0-1.
Kickoff is set for 8:00 PM ET on Big Ten Network.
Indiana opened conference play with a 29-23 victory over Northwestern. Rutgers finally broke into the win column last week, hammering Howard 58-7 during the second game of its three-game homestand.
Indiana finally leaves Bloomington, and Rutgers conveniently scheduled Homecoming, a blackout and the defending champs.
The all-time series is tied 5-5, but Rutgers has won the last three meetings. The Scarlet Knights took the most recent matchup 31-14 in Bloomington in 2023.

Indiana Hoosiers vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights Odds & Last 5
The opening odds make Indiana one of Saturday’s biggest favorites. The Hoosiers opened -3225 on the moneyline, with Rutgers returning +1337.
Indiana is laying 24.5 points.
The Hoosiers cruised through their first three games, beating North Texas 52-16, Howard 55-0 and Western Kentucky 38-0.
Northwestern finally made them work for one.
Indiana trailed in the second half before recovering for a 29-23 victory. Lee Beebe Jr. rushed for 203 yards, and Josh Hoover’s late one-yard TD provided the decisive score.
Rutgers’ first three games included losses to UMass, Boston College and USC. The Scarlet Knights responded against Howard with 534 total yards and seven TD’s on their first 11 possessions.

Scarlet Knights Stats
Rutgers is averaging 33.8 points per game, although that number received a healthy boost from last week’s 58-point eruption.
KJ Duff has been the biggest problem for opposing secondaries.
The 6-foot-6 receiver leads the nation with seven receiving TD’s and is averaging 137.5 yards per game. Antwan Raymond gives Rutgers another legitimate weapon, averaging 109.3 rushing yards.
The Scarlet Knights finally put everything together against Howard.
Raymond rushed for 140 yards and three TD’s, while Duff added 131 receiving yards and another score. Rutgers finished with 268 passing yards and 266 on the ground, which is about as balanced as an offensive coordinator could draw it up.
Defensively, the results have been far less convincing.
Rutgers has allowed 114 points through four games, although the Scarlet Knights have intercepted four passes. Bradlee Jones picked off two against Howard as the defense forced three turnovers and held the Bison to 184 total yards.
Hoosiers Stats
Indiana has scored 174 points through four games while allowing only 39.
The offense has been dangerous both ways. The Hoosiers have thrown for 921 yards and rushed for 935, giving Curt Cignetti very little reason to become overly attached to one method of moving the football.
Lee Beebe Jr. leads the ground game with 398 yards after his career-best performance against Northwestern. Turbo Richard has 383 rushing yards and four TD’s and was considered day-to-day this week after leaving the Northwestern game with a leg injury.
Charlie Becker leads Indiana with 370 receiving yards and six TD’s.
The Hoosiers have also consistently created negative plays on defense, recording 11 sacks through four games. Their shutout streak reached 11 consecutive quarters before Northwestern finally ended it in the second half last week.
Hoosiers vs. Scarlet Knights QB Matchup
Josh Hoover has made an immediate impact in his first season running Indiana’s offense.
The TCU transfer has completed 56 of 80 passes for 850 yards, 11 TD’s and no interceptions. He hasn’t been asked to throw at a huge volume, but a 70 percent completion rate with zero picks is a fairly efficient way to introduce yourself to a new fan base.
Dylan Lonergan has started the last three games for Rutgers.
He has thrown for 708 yards and seven TD’s during those starts. Lonergan was especially sharp against Howard, completing 12 of 17 passes for 214 yards and two scores.

Rutgers also has AJ Surace available after he started at Boston College earlier this season. Surace threw for 230 yards and three TD’s in that game and has remained involved behind Lonergan.
Hoover owns the cleaner statistical profile and operates behind a much more complete Indiana roster. Lonergan has shown he can generate production when Rutgers gives him time, but Saturday brings a substantial jump in defensive difficulty.
Indiana Hoosiers vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights bottom line: Indiana owns the cleaner QB situation and deeper roster, while Rutgers gets its toughest test at the end of a three-game homestand.

Hoosiers Scarlet Knights Free Pick: Rutgers +24.5
Here is my Hoosiers Scarlet Knights free pick: I’m taking Rutgers +24.5. Indiana is unquestionably the better team, but now we’re being asked to lay more than three TD’s in its first road game of the season. That’s where I get interested in the ugly side.
Rutgers doesn’t need to threaten the upset. At this number, the Scarlet Knights can lose decisively and still cash my ticket, which gives me considerably more margin than Indiana had to spare in last week’s six-point win over Northwestern.
Indiana can remind everyone it’s the national champion and still leave my +24.5 ticket perfectly healthy.
I also like the situation for the home dog. Indiana spent September in Bloomington, finally got dragged into a four-quarter game last week, and now heads to Piscataway for a nighttime Homecoming blackout. None of that makes Rutgers the better football team. It does make laying 24.5 on the road a much different proposition than steamrolling another visitor at home.
That’s the entire bet for me. I’m buying a huge number with the home team and asking Rutgers to keep this respectable rather than asking it to pull off something heroic. Indiana can control the game, win comfortably and send everybody home happy, including me. Give me Rutgers +24.5.
