The Indiana Hoosiers are chasing an eighth victory of the season as they head to Ross-Ade Stadium on Saturday to square off with the 4 – 7 Purdue Boilermakers.
The Old Oaken Bucket will be sitting along the sidelines with the winner of the game getting to put their paws on the historic trophy. But this year, the team with the postseason resume is Indiana and not Purdue which is fine with Hoosier head coach Tom Allen. The Boilers have beaten Indiana in the final game of the season the last two years, and each time it ended up costing Indiana a bowl appearance leaving them with 5 wins in back-to-back seasons.
Purdue has obviously had a down season, and there will not be a third straight bowl appearance for head coach Jeff Brohm this year. Last weekend’s loss to Wisconsin sealed the deal for the Boilers who were still chasing a bowl bid at 4 – 6 going into Saturday’s game.
The Bucket may be on the line again, but with Purdue out of the post-season picture, it takes away a little of the fanfare and excitement for this rivalry game in the Big Ten Conference.

Indiana Hoosiers
Hoosier’s head coach Tom Allen has to be relieved that there isn’t as much pressure to win this game as there have been the last two campaigns. Indiana has met Purdue on the final game of the season for years now, but the last two meetings that went to the Boilermakers basically ended the Hoosiers season each time.
Indiana was 5 – 6 in 2017 and 5 – 6 in 2018 when these two met, as both Jeff Brohm and Tom Allen are in their 3rd year blowing the big whistle.
Last year’s loss really was a little more bone-crushing and ego-bruising to this program, as a 4 – 1 start with promise ended with a 1 – 6 run that saw the season finish on their own field to watch Purdue tote around the Bucket.
Of course, there is always pressure to win rivalry games because they define a season in a lot of respects. Make no mistake that Purdue only wants to win this game to say they have taken 3 straight wins for the Bucket and the hell with the records!
Well, no bowl game for Purdue, as I said, takes away a little of the excitement behind the meaning and outcome here, but it is still the rivalry it will always be regardless.
You know, we all hear how Indiana is going to throw the ball around the park to get things done, but this team is actually well-balanced as I see it. This team has 21 TD through the air and 20 TD on the ground, so that tells me that when things are going right everything us just clicking.
With Michael Penix out of the picture, Peyton Ramsey has full control of what goes on out there, and he is no stranger to tucking the ball in and using his legs to help move chains and score points.
Stevie Scott III needs 155 yards to splash the 1,000-yard rushing mark this year, and with a bowl game coming he should get there with this game to come as well.
Whop Philyor needs 137 receiving yards to hit the magic number, so there is a reason Indiana is doing well and headed to a bowl game this year.

Purdue Boilermakers
The Boilermakers looked they were just dead and buried at 2 – 6 with 4 games left to play in the season, but then wins over Nebraska and Northwestern gave this team some life and hope for a potential post-season bid.
That really made last weekend’s loss to Wisconsin the ultimate dagger to the 2019 campaign for Jeff Brohm and this year’s Boiler program.
That is what makes this game tricky for Brohm because getting his kids up for this rivalry game after getting knocked out of bowl season really is challenging.
Jack Plummer got thrust into a starter’s role after Elijah Sindelar got injured, and then Plummer went down for the year leaving the signal-calling to Aiden O’Connell.
O’Connell has already thrown the ball 93 times in his last 2 games, and we expect him to go out and do more of the same against Indiana. He was forced into throwing the ball a little more as they got further down against Wisconsin, but he is likely going to go out and try to show he can be an option next season. This is certainly some audition material for O’Connell although he doesn’t have the mobility to aid his game.
David Bell needs 101 receiving yards to hit the 1,000-yard mark, as he and Brycen Hopkins are both going to see a bunch of balls this Saturday.

See those trends? They point to the Over and so am I! I see this game as the battle for the Bucket that matters to these kids regardless of the records. No, Purdue isn’t going bowling, and there will be no replay of the last 2 years.
I still see this as a 45 – 42 game with some fireworks all over the field as long as the weather isn’t a major factor. Should that weather get to this venue before or during the game? Well, that could influence the outcome of a prediction like 45 – 42, obviously.
Anyway, I see points as long as the weather holds up so grab the total to go over the number (57).
