If Houston wants a chance to win the American Athletic Conference it will need some help. And it definitely can’t trip up against Tulane.
The Green Wave host the Cougars in the second-to-last weekend of football in the American Athletic.
Houston looked dead when it lost to Memphis three weeks back. It was the Cougars’ second loss in a row and put the Tigers in the driver’s seat, where they still are going into Week 12.
Memphis hasn’t lost since September. The Tigers have won five games in a row since their lone conference loss, at Central Florida against the undefeated Knights.
But nor has Houston, at least since that narrow loss at home to Memphis. The Coogs won on the road against a ranked South Florida team and hung 52 points on East Carolina two weeks ago to get to 4–2 in the conference. They enjoyed a bye last week.
So Houston is a game back with two to play; it has to win out. The good news is that Tulane isn’t a very good team and the Cougars’ offense looks primed to continue scoring in bunches.
In his second game since taking over the starting quarterback job, D’Eriq King went 15-for-21 for 330 yards and three touchdowns. The sophomore hasn’t thrown an interception yet this season but it’s still a little early for that to mean much. He’s only thrown it 43 times.
Three Houston running backs have carried the ball at least 47 times, including Duke Catalon who leads the team with 596 yards. He only ran it nine times last week and eight times the week before after handling at least 22 carries in three consecutive games. As a result, he’s been more efficient. He averaged about nine yards a pop last week.
Tulane Green Wave
Tulane’s last game was also against East Carolina. The Green Wave defeated ECU for its first win in five weeks and just the second in the conference. Tulane’s only other American Athletic Conference win came against Tulsa, which has just one win and sits in last place.
Dontrell Hilliard could not be stopped. He carried it 28 times for a career-best 189 yards and two touchdowns. As a team, Tulane rushed it over 50 times on the road for 325 yards. Jonathan Banks completed 11 of 19 passes but two of those incompletions went for interceptions.
Banks did win the game with a 16-yard touchdown run in overtime, though. He scored twice on the ground and rushed for just short of 100 yards. Tulane blew a 10-point fourth quarter lead and gave up the tying score with less than a minute left on the clock. Hopefully the end result gives this team a little confidence going forward.
Free Week 12 NCAA Football Pick
I like Houston. The Cougars are on the road but this is an explosive team that doesn’t have all its pieces but is playing well nonetheless.
