No. 22 Houston travels to Lubbock on Friday night for a ranked Big 12 opener against No. 13 Texas Tech. Both teams enter at 2-0, and FOX will carry the 8:00 PM ET kickoff from Galaxy Stadium. It will be Texas Tech’s first Friday night regular-season home game since 1941.
Houston opened with a 33-20 victory over Oregon State before destroying Southern 77-6. The Cougars scored touchdowns on their first 11 possessions against the Jaguars and piled up 591 total yards, including 388 on the ground.
Friday marks the first meeting since 1989 where Houston and Texas Tech are both nationally ranked.
Texas Tech followed a 33-10 win over Abilene Christian by beating Oregon State 35-24 in Corvallis. The Red Raiders trailed 24-21 early in the fourth quarter before scoring the final 14 points to escape with the victory. Oregon State finished with 451 total yards against the Texas Tech defense.

Will Hammond is Texas Tech’s starting quarterback after taking over the job entering 2026. He has completed 46 of 60 passes for 487 yards, two touchdowns and one interception through the Red Raiders’ first two victories. Hammond opened with 298 passing yards against Abilene Christian.
He followed that by completing 20 of 27 attempts for 189 yards and a touchdown at Oregon State.
Houston counters with fifth-year starter Conner Weigman, who has thrown for 425 yards and four touchdowns through two games. He produced 305 yards through the air against Oregon State, then needed only limited action against Southern after Houston raced to a 28-0 first-quarter lead.
Weigman threw three touchdowns before leaving the Southern blowout. Freshman Keisean Henderson handled much of the remaining work and added two passing scores of his own.
Friday’s matchup, though, belongs to Weigman and Hammond.
Both quarterbacks enter their Big 12 opener unbeaten, with Hammond getting the home field and Weigman leading a Houston team that has been excellent away from home in recent seasons.

Here is my Cougars Red Raiders free pick: I’m laying the Red Raiders -7.5. Houston has looked good through two games, but this is a serious jump from beating Oregon State and Southern at home to facing a ranked Texas Tech team in Lubbock.
Tech hasn’t been dominant against the number, and that keeps this price from getting completely out of hand. The Red Raiders were pushed at Oregon State, trailing 24-21 before scoring the final 14 points in a 35-24 win.
Houston’s first road test comes against a Texas Tech team that has owned this series lately.
Houston deserves respect here. The Cougars bring the nation’s longest road winning streak into Lubbock and have won 18 games away from TDECU Stadium over the last five seasons.
The matchup I like is Texas Tech’s ability to stay balanced. Will Hammond has been efficient through two starts, while the Red Raiders have enough depth in the backfield to avoid becoming predictable.
Houston’s defense is legitimate, so I’m not expecting Tech to cruise from the opening kick. Still, this is easily the Cougars’ toughest offensive assignment so far.
There’s also some rivalry muscle behind the favorite. Texas Tech has beaten Houston seven straight times, including a 35-11 road win last season.
I’ll trust Tech to create separation in the second half. Give me Texas Tech -7.5.
