Cougars vs. Wildcats Gameday
The No. 22 Houston Cougars visit the Kansas State Wildcats at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan on Saturday, October 10, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET on FOX in this Week 6 Big 12 matchup.
Houston enters 4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play under Willie Fritz. The Cougars have won two straight and are looking to build on their early momentum.
Kansas State is 3-1 under first-year head coach Collin Klein, including an 0-1 Big 12 mark. The Wildcats are 3-0 at home and return from their bye week looking for a response. Extra preparation is useful, although somebody still has to make the tackles.
Houston brings a national ranking to Manhattan, where Kansas State has yet to lose this season.
These programs have split their two previous meetings. Houston won 24-19 in 2024 after Kansas State delivered a 41-0 shutout in 2023.
There’s another interesting connection: Klein coached Houston QB Conner Weigman at Texas A&M in 2024. The Wildcats’ head coach knows the visiting quarterback’s strengths, although knowing what a player can do and stopping him are two different jobs.
It’s Week 6, Houston Cougars vs. Kansas State Wildcats, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Houston Cougars vs. Kansas State Wildcats Odds & Last 5
Kansas State is favored by 2.5 points at -143 on the moneyline, with Houston getting +2.5 and +118. The total is 55.5 points.
Houston defeated UCF 27-17 last Saturday after beating Georgia Southern 42-28. Its only defeat came in a 28-26 decision at Texas Tech.
Kansas State lost 31-26 at Cincinnati after opening the season with three victories. The Wildcats previously beat Tulane 31-20, but their first conference road test exposed some weaknesses.
Houston is 2-3 ATS this season, while Kansas State is 2-2. Those records aren’t exactly going on anyone’s refrigerator, but the short spread makes the matchup worth examining.
Compare the available numbers at your preferred sportsbooks before placing a wager. When a game is priced this tightly, half a point can matter more than an entire afternoon of clever analysis.

Wildcats Stats
Kansas State has scored 162 points through four games, averaging more than 40 per contest. The Wildcats have rushed for 963 yards, with their ground attack providing a strong offensive foundation.
Rodney Fields Jr. has contributed 274 rushing yards and four TD’s, while Joe Jackson has added 189 yards and one score. Jackson also gives the offense another receiving option.
Defensively, Kansas State has allowed just 61 points while recording 12 sacks and three fumble recoveries. The Wildcats have surrendered only 53 first downs, showing how effectively they’ve limited extended possessions.
There is a catch. Cincinnati found success running between the tackles, exposing some problems with Kansas State’s interior defense. That weakness becomes important against another physical Big 12 opponent.
Tight end Will Anciaux is out for the season, and backup QB Blake Barnett is unavailable. The Wildcats must also monitor their remaining offensive depth entering Saturday.
Cougars Stats
Houston has scored 205 points through five games, averaging 41 per contest. The Cougars have produced 1,147 rushing yards and lead the nation in third-down conversions at 65.6%.
Re’Shaun Sanford II leads the running backs with 314 yards, while Makhi Hughes has added 309. Amare Thomas has contributed 330 receiving yards and four TD’s.
The defense has allowed 99 points while collecting four interceptions, three fumble recoveries and 10 sacks. Houston has been particularly effective at limiting opposing rushing attacks.
Houston’s ability to extend drives presents a serious challenge to Kansas State’s stingy first-down defense.
Linebacker Jaden Yates is out after suffering a leg injury against UCF. Running back John Hebert, receiver Muizz Tounkara and linebacker Bryson Castile are also unavailable.
Offensive lineman RJ Lee and tight end Jacory Thurman are questionable. Safety Myles Rowser has been cleared to play, giving the secondary another experienced option. At least the injury report contains some good news for a change.
Fritz needs disciplined blocking and reliable ball security from his offense. Houston has the personnel to sustain drives, but penalties and negative plays could erase that advantage quickly.

Cougars vs. Wildcats QB Matchup
Kansas State starts Avery Johnson, who has thrown for 910 yards, seven TD’s and two interceptions through four games. His mobility makes him dangerous when the pocket breaks down.
Johnson has also rushed for 291 yards, giving the Wildcats a productive option on designed runs and scrambles. Houston must account for him beyond obvious passing situations.
With Barnett unavailable, Kansas State has limited experienced depth behind its starter. Protecting Johnson becomes even more important.
Houston counters with Conner Weigman, who has thrown for 1,186 yards, 11 TD’s and one interception. His decision-making has helped the Cougars develop an efficient passing attack.
Weigman also scored three rushing TD’s in Houston’s comeback against UCF. That versatility forces defenses to respect his legs near the goal line, where losing track of the QB can become an expensive mistake.
Backup Keisean Henderson has thrown for 83 yards and two TD’s in limited action.
CP Is More Than Just Sports Picks!
“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Johnson is the more established designed runner, while Weigman has been the more efficient passer. Both can create opportunities outside the pocket, making defensive discipline essential.
Kansas State must prevent Weigman from finding easy throws on early downs. Houston needs to contain Johnson without opening running lanes for the Wildcats’ backs.
Neither defense can afford to lose track of the QB once the original play breaks down.
Houston Cougars vs. Kansas State Wildcats bottom line: Houston’s offensive efficiency meets a disciplined Kansas State defense, setting up an intriguing battle for control of the football.
Houston Cougars vs. Kansas State Wildcats Football Betting Trends

- Kansas State is 19-4 straight up in their last 23 home games.

Cougars Wildcats Free Pick: Houston Cougars +2.5
Here is my Cougars Wildcats free pick: Houston Cougars +2.5. Kansas State is undefeated in Manhattan, but the Wildcats are laying points against a ranked opponent that’s been considerably tougher than its betting record suggests. Home-field advantage is nice. It doesn’t automatically come with three free points and a gift basket.
Houston is 4-0-1 ATS in its last five games as a road underdog, and that fits the spot I’m targeting. The Cougars have enough offensive balance to survive an early deficit without abandoning their game plan, while Kansas State is coming off a bye following a conference loss. Neither team has much room for a sloppy afternoon.
I’m taking the team that can absorb a punch, answer with a sustained drive and still have a chance to win outright.
The Wildcats’ home record deserves respect, but I don’t see enough separation between these teams to justify laying the number. Houston’s experience in close conference games makes the points worthwhile.
Give me Houston Cougars +2.5.
