There’s still a lot to be learned about both Hawaii and Wyoming after they each played their first game of the season last week. The Rainbows definitely had the better opening with a 34-19 win at Fresno State as +2.5 underdogs
Wyoming is hoping a home game can help them get into the win column. The Cowboys dropped a 37-34 OT tilt at Nevada last week as -3 point road favorites. Hawaii opened as a -2.5 favorite, but Wyoming is up to -1.
The Rainbows had a great offensive opener, but it wasn’t an air attack like the Hawaii teams of the past. Todd Graham’s team racked up 323 yards rushing on 53 carries against Fresno State in the 34-19 road win.
Fresno State didn’t have the best rushing defense a year ago, allowing 160+ yards/game, but Hawaii’s outing showed optimism. The Rainbows had the nation’s #5 passing offense last season, running was an afterthought.
It’s not like the Rainbows have completely abandoned their passing game, however. In fact Chevan Cordeiro was very efficient going 20/31 for 229 yards while adding 116 yards and 2 TD rushing.
The Hawaii defense was impressive last week as well, holding a Bulldogs team that averaged over 30 ppg last season to just 16. The Rainbows forced 3 INTs against Fresno State QB Jake Haener.
Wyoming needs a bounce back game after their OT loss in Nevada last week. The biggest problem for the Cowboys was the inability to stop the Wolfpack passing game as QB Carson Strong tossed for 420 yards with 4 TD / 0 INT.
Trouble in the secondary isn’t exactly appealing heading into a matchup with Hawaii’s offense. Last week’s game wasn’t an anomaly though, as the Cowboys had the nation’s 20th worst pass defense in 2019.
The Wyoming offense was less than impressive in the opener, yet they still forced OT, thanks largely in part to two lost fumbles by the Wolfpack.
QB Levi Williams was just 16/31 for 227 yards with a TD and INT. Oddsmakers are expecting some points Friday night with a betting total of 59.5, but is that number set largely in part due to the diverse offense of Hawaii.

Free Week 9 NCAA Football Prediction:
Hawaii has either won, or lost by one score or less in the last four matchups (2-2). These two teams don’t meet that often however with just four head to head games since 2013.
Free NCAA Betting Pick: Hawaii +2.5
The public seems to like Wyoming heading back home as Hawaii actually opened as the favorite. The Rainbows offense was just too impressive last week to pass on getting points.
