The Georgia Southern Eagles will make the three-hour trip north to Atlanta and face the Georgia State Panthers this Saturday on ESPN3. Georgia State will open as the two-point favorites, with the total opening at 66.
HISTORY: Modern Day Hate is what they call it down south, and these two schools have a long, storied history on the court. Georgia State leads the on-field series 5-3, after winning the last two matchups.
Georgia Southern Eagles
Georgia Southern has enjoyed a nice start to the 2022 season, largely in part to the biggest win in school history. The Eagles hosted Morgan State in the opener, and covered a massive 39-point margin with a victory, but their feat in Week 2 was a bit more unseen. Georgia Southern went into Lincoln and defeated Nebraska, putting a nail in the Scott Frost experiment. A lost to UAB followed, but a win over Ball State would send them to 3-1.
In Week 5, Georgia Southern lost to Coastal Carolina in Conway, but they covered for fourth time this season.
Georgia Southern scores 37.8 points per game, while allowing 28.3 ppg.
Kyle Vantrease has come in and grasped Clay Helton’s aerial attack swiftly. The Buffalo transfer tossed four touchdowns in his debut, then threw for a career-high 409 yards in the upset win over Nebraska. Vantrease is going give the Sun Belt some this Fall, if he can cut down on the turnovers.
Vantrease has 1,574 passing yards with ten touchdowns to seven interceptions and a pair of rushing scores through the first five games of the season.
Junior running backs Jalen White and Gerald Green have split the load early for the Eagles. White scored two touchdowns in each of the first three games, and he leads them with 450 rushing yards. Green has rushed for 290 yards and four touchdowns thus far.
Derwin Burgess Jr. has come out of the gate strong after a solid freshman season. He’s on pace to triple his total from last year after a 12-catch performance against the Huskers, and 133 yards in the win over Ball State. Khaleb Hood is also on pace to set a new personal-best after catching six or more passes in the first three games. Burgess Jr. leads in receptions (32), receiving yards (401), and touchdowns (3). Hood is second in each category with 27 catches for 309 yards and one scores.
Georgia State Panthers
Georgia State continues to acquire quality non-conference play, but they also continue to fall just a bit short on the scoreboard. This is truly the most competitive winless team in the country. Georgia State has dealt with the Carolina’s in all four of their matchups, starting with a solid Week 1 showing in Columbia versus South Carolina. The Panthers fell victims to Beamer-Ball after taking a 2-point lead in the third quarter, but this is only the beginning.
Georgia State boldly scheduled North Carolina for their home opener, and nearly came away with a big upset. A fourth-quarter touchdown would save UNC, and the same thing would happen to a more dramatic extent when the Panthers loss to Charlotte on a last second score. Their troubles continued when they hosted a conference power Coastal Carolina the following Saturday, but the Panthers finally hopped in the win column last time out.
In Week 5, Georgia Sate defeated Army, 31-14, improving to 2-3 against the spread this season.
Georgia State scores 27.6 points per game, while allowing 33.4 ppg.
Darren Grainger has given mixed results in his first month of action. The senior quarterback was ineffective in the opening contest versus SC, but he played well very the home opener against UNC. After completing just 24% of his passes in Week 1, Grainger threw for three touchdowns and added 75 yards on the ground in the loss to the Tar Heels. He threw four scores in the shootout with Charlotte, but he did not perform well against his hometown team, Coastal Carolina.
Grainger thrown for 1,028 passing yards with ten touchdowns to four interceptions, while adding 233 yards and two scores on the ground.
Tucker Gregg, Marcus Carroll, and Jamyest Williams have all split the load early. Gregg leads the squad early on with 349 yards and four touchdowns after a big game versus Charlotte. Carroll missed the UNC game, but he’s third with 218 yards over four contests. Williams is second with 274 yards a good showing against Army.
Jamari Thrash has been the number reed for Grainger early this season. The junior wideout leads the Panthers in receptions (25) and receiving yards (428). Robert Lewis has scored in every game this season, and he went off for a career-high 115 yards against UNC. Lewis is second on the team with 14 catches for 288 yards, while pacing the team with five touchdowns.
